With Gesine Tuitjer, I have discussed how entrepreneurship scholars may perform relevant qualitative empirical entrepreneurship research rigorously by combining autoethnography and the documentary method. Based on a systematic literature review, the paper discusses and compares the utility of these methods for enriching an entrepreneurship researcher's qualitative empirical toolbox, which widely applies to Gioia protocol. This comparison of methods, including the Gioia protocol, allows conclusions about how to increase both the relevance and rigour of qualitative empirical entrepreneurship research.
