WB Alfred S. Mason was raised as a Master Mason in the Mt Moriah Lodge #296 in New York in 1861.
A couple years after he was discharged from his service as a Union Officer in the Civil War, he relocated to Michigan, he transferred his Masonic membership to the Newaygo Lodge #131 on June 9th of 1864.
A few Masons from the Newaygo lodge, decided to seek a Masonic Charter from the Grand Lodge of Michigan to start a Lodge in the city of Big Rapids in 1865, Bro. Mason transferred to that Lodge.as soon as the Charter was granted.
Worshipful Brother Mason became the first Worshipful Master of the newly formed Big Rapids Lodge #171 in 1865. He stayed as Worshipful Master for the first two years, then giving up the seat to Worshipful Brother Gay for 1867. Worshipful Brother Mason continued his Masonic duties serving in various Officer chairs and returned as Worshipful Master in 1873, 1874, 1875, 1876 and 1877. WB Charlie Gay then sat in as Worshipful Master for a few years, until WB Mason sat for his last time in the East as Worshipful Master in 1883.
Brother Mason was listed with an occupation as a "Mail Agent" in 1884, at that time, he lived at 416 Elm St. Big Rapids, MI.

Brother Alfred S. Mason was an Upstanding and honorable Mason for over 40 years, and was relieved of his earthy duties on September 9th 1904
Brother Mason is buried in Highland view Cemetery in Big Rapids Mecosta County, Michigan, USA.
