Timber columns manufactured to order
Working on behalf of the customer we can design columns to suit their exact needs
create a test piece for confirmation
and to allow dimensioning of the timber sizes for delivery by the specialist timber merchant
The CNC work was based on two cutters 18½mm and 3½mm ball nose cutter
In order to guarantee that each quadrant 'blank' was placed exactly in the same place on the machine bed. A 'false' bed was located on the table and registration lines cut on the X and Y axis 2mm deep with a vee cutter.
the 'blanks' were then located against these registration lines and secured with screws from underneath
The 'blank' alined with the X axis registration
and with the 'Y axis registration which was at 1200 x 350 where the X and Y axis were zeroed
To facilitate the stripping of the machine to allow other work to take place the whole false bed sistem was registered to a point on the 'fixed' machine bed.
The square edged blanks ready for machining
the roughing toolpath with the 8½mm cutter
the completed roughing toolpath
Then the finished toolpath with the 3½mm cutter
the face sanded
before the flutess ate cut with the 18½mm cutter
The blanks were then processed and stored accordingly
a cramping jig was fabricated to guarantee the jointing of the segments
which were joined in halves
before being formed into completed columns
plywood cramping jigs allow the joints to be pulled up tight
the columns of course will be stood upright when in their final position
For those without a 5 axis CNC router, using appropriate CAD software
it is possible to set out the exact position and size of the flutes
