Vocabulary List:

Directions: As you read, write down definitions for each item of the list in words that you understand from the text. HTML: hypertext markup language, a standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages

URL: abbreviation of uniform resource locator it is the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web

1. Is Wikipedia considered Web 1.0 or Web 2.0? Explain.
   1. Wikipedia is a web 2.o because many people are contruniting and making changes to the content on the page.
2. Should a researcher place absolute trust in a search engine? Why or why not?
   1. A researcher can absolutely trust a search engine because the information shown and results can be censored or altered.
3. "The architecture of human knowledge has changed as a result of search." What does this claim mean?
   1. Information isn't blocked and can be accessed just by searching it.
4. When you type a word or phrase into the Google search engine, what is the search algorithm that is being used? Does Google’s search engine search the web? Explain.
   1. The google search engine uses keywords from what you type in and searches its indexes not directly to the web and gives those results..
5. What does it mean to “empty the cache”?
   1. Deleting saved webpages and searches.
6. Think of a number between 1 and 100. If you tell me "too high" or "too low", I can guess the number in 7 guesses. How come? What algorithm makes this possible?
   1. Using a binary search algorithm, by splitting the number guessed and if it's low and high narrows the number down faster until the results found.
7. What is the PageRank algorithm? How does it work?
   1. The PageRank algorithm puts the most popular or the most viewed websites first and least below them.
8. What is a captcha and why are captchas important?
   1. Captchas are used to filter and distinguish bots and humans.
9. "The architecture of human knowledge has changed as a result of search." Do you agree?
   1. Yes I believe that information is easier to access when net neutrality was a thing but now that net neutrality has ended, i'm disagreeing a little.
10. "Google emerged -- from this dilemma at least -- with its pocketbooks overflowing and its principles intact." Do you agree?
    1. Yes I agree because google needs the money to do what they need to do best and keep everything in order.
11. What do you think about the differences between Figure 4.10 and Figure 4.11?
    1. The difference is that there is chinese censorship on the topic and normally out of china.
12. Would you retain your search history or delete it? Why?
    1. I would retain my search history because even if someone accessed my account,there wouldn’t be anything that i wouldn’t want to share with the world.
