Adopt A Block!

posted Jun 9, 2015, 8:00 PM by Belmead Community League

Did you know that there are a number of volunteer programs that residents can engage in to help keep Edmonton looking amazing?

Each year thousands of Edmonton residents Adopt a Block through Capital City Clean Up to keep their community litter-free during the warm weather months. This program gives volunteers tools to clean litter and debris from neighbourhood areas.

Partner in Parks volunteers can assist the City by signing up to maintain a flower bed, cul-de-sac island piece of parkland or piece of land along a roadway.
These volunteers are supported by the Horticulture staff in the Parks Service areas.
Neither program provides volunteers with the approval or tools to maintain City owned bushes, shrubs or trees.
If you have concerns about shrubs or trees on City property, you can call 311 to alert the City’s Horticulture or Forestry staff to the issue.

Graffiti – Many community members have noticed an increase in graffiti in the neighbourhood but don’t know what to do about it.  Please follow the procedures set out by the Edmonton Police and City of Edmonton as listed below.

Graffiti is a Crime

Graffiti is a criminal offence when placed on public or private property without the owner's consent.

Private property owners are required to remove graffiti from their property within a reasonable amount of time.

Buildings and structures should not have graffiti on them that is visible from any surrounding property.

You should call 911 if you witness a graffiti crime in progress.

Graffiti Removal

Keep the exterior of your business clear of graffiti. Tidy walls have a positive effect on your property value and business sales.

The 3Rs of graffiti management are:

  • Record: Take photos of the vandalized area and record when it occurred
  • Report: Inform the Edmonton Police Service and the City
  • Remove: Wash or paint over the graffiti

Reporting Your Concerns

If you have a concern about graffiti:

  • Discuss the concern or notify the business owner so they may contact police
  • Record the address of the violation and a description of the problem if you can't resolve it directly with the business owner
  • Call 311
  • Provide your name, address, phone number, and the details of your concern in case your testimony is required in court
