Personal Refrigerators Allowed With $30 Fee

For 2010-2011 the district originally had banned all personal appliances and at the summer 2010 bargaining the BEA secured an agreement with the administration to allow personal fans at no cost to the teacher and to also allow personal microwaves if the teacher paid a $10 annual fee to offset its operating cost. 46 teachers bought a microwave permit last school year. 

That same policy continues for 2011-2012 but at the summer 2011 the district also agreed to also allow teachers to have a personal compact refrigerator on campus if the teacher pays a $30 annual fee.

Teachers are cautioned to NOT ask students or Parent Support Groups to cover this cost!  It should be an out-of-pocket expense for the teacher. And the units could be banned again in 2012-2013, depending on how things go this year, so invest in one at your own risk.

2011-2012 Personal Appliances Policy

• Fans are allowed, but not space heaters.

• Personal microwaves will be allowed if the teacher pays out of pocket a $10 annual fee to the site finance secretary to offset its operating cost.

• Personal compact refrigerators (defined as less than 7.75 cubic feet and 36 inches or less in height) will be allowed if the teacher pays out of pocket a $30 annual fee to the site finance secretary to offset its operating cost.

• All other appliances must be district-owned and the district will continue to try to place them across sites to improve accessibility.  Individuals or groups may donate an appliance to the district.  If the appliance is accepted, it would be placed at the district’s discretion to improve access for teachers in isolated areas of a campus.  Any donated appliances which are accepted become the district’s property to be placed or disposed of at the district’s sole discretion.
