A recent weekend trip to KU to visit my daughter has reminded me of the necessity of finding an appropriate work/life balance.

I was overwhelmed by school stuff; insect collections to grade, parents to call, meetings to attend. I didn’t believe I could afford to take a weekend off because I simply had too much to do. The visit was important to my daughter and my husband however, so I went.

It was a fabulous fall weekend – sunshine and cool temperatures – perfect weather for a college football game and we all had a wonderful time. I returned Sunday afternoon relaxed and happier.

I still have insect collections to grade, parents to call, and meetings to attend, but I don’t feel so overwhelmed. My attitude is more positive and I’m actually enjoying grading those collections!

So, put school on the back burner occasionally and enjoy life a bit. Take a night or weekend off and spend time doing something you love. Sometimes the most important thing we can do for our students is to take care of ourselves.
