REPRESENT!
Part of your membership is professional representation, especially in disciplinary meetings. Our Member's Rights Officer, Megan Freeman, works closely with our OEA Advocate, Melissa Kaltenbaugh to protect your rights. If you are called into a meeting with an administrator, especially if you believe it will become disciplinary, you have the right to have an advocate present.
How do you do that?
Contact Megan Freeman and let her know what's going on.
Contact your administrator and tell him/her that you intend to have an advocate present. They must have 24 hours notice of an advocate's presence.
Document your concerns so you and your advocate will be prepared for the meeting.
Our negotiated language reads as follows:
1.12 Right to Representation at Disciplinary Meeting:
At a meeting where a teacher will be presented with a written, formal admonishment, the teacher shall be permitted to be represented by a BEA or OEA representative of their choosing. “
Teacher may ask, ‘Is this a disciplinary meeting?” If admin says yes, teacher should respond that they would like to have BEA representation and it is required that both parties get 24 hours notice. Then request a rescheduled meeting date/time.
