In 2013 Craftsman came out with a new modular series of tools. The Bolt On series is made for Craftsman by the Stanley-Black and Decker Tool Group. The Bolt-On uses one motor with different attachments onto the base unit. There are three Base units available. 20v Max cordless, 12v Cordless, and a Corded 4 amp drill. The accessories currently available for the Bolt-on system are Drill, Hammer Drill, Impact Driver, Router, Trim Saw, Jigsaw, Multi-Tool, Sander, Reciprocating Saw, and Inflator. All of these tools are interchangeable with the Black and Decker Matrix system.
The Batteries for the Bolt On system are the slide on style of 20V that is interchangeable with the Black and Decker 20V Max Battery. Craftsman only makes one version of this battery so far however Black and Decker make 3 versions of the battery a 1, 1.3 and 1.5 Amp hour version.
Craftsman used to make a 20Volt Professional series of tools. The 20 V Professional tool batteries will not work with the Bolt-ON series.
Advantages to the Craftsman Bolt-on Modular System
The system is small, you can put all of your tool heads in one convenient bag.
Spare battery Availability is very good especially with the Black and Decker Matrix compatibility and should be for a long time to come.
The basic Drill is a good solid unit.
This system will probably be around a long time as it is new to market in 2013 and there are a lot of tools available for it.
The slide on style of battery is much more versitile than the Stem style.
Disadvantages to the Bolt-On System
It is a light duty home owner level tool system.
The Trim Saw will only cut 19/32 deep, it will not cut a 2 x 4 with one cut.
The inflator does not have a digital guage and auto shut off like the Craftsman 19.2 and the Ryobi 18+ inflators do.
