About the Siberian

Siberian History & Description

The Siberian is a natural breed, originally found in the wild in the Forests of Siberia.  As a pet, we believe we have found the best  breed in the world!  They are intelligent, playful, curious, loyal, and easy to live with.  Required grooming is minimal; their personality is charming and social, never annoying.  Our cats have the most pleasant vocalizations -- chirps, trills, and silent meows.  They are also a hearty, healthy breed.

F A Q

Q.  The Siberian is a long-haired cat. Do they shed a lot?  How often will I have to groom them?

A.  Although the Siberian has a beautiful long coat, as you see below, they are very low maintenance.  Siberians "blow" their coats twice per year.  Other than those times, they shed very little. During the times when they are blowing coat, you can notice large amounts of hair being lost by just petting them.  At those times, for about a week or two each spring and fall, you will want to groom your cat daily or a couple times per day.  Grooming your cat by brushing and trimming nails every few weeks is a great way to develop a positive bonding experience with your cat.

Q.  Are Siberians basically the same as Maine Coons?

A.  NO.  Both Maine Coon and Siberians are natural breeds in the forest cat family.  Siberians can still be found in the wild in Russia.  However, each breed is completely distinct and unrelated.  One of the primary differences is the hypo-allergenic quality of the Siberian.  The structure and body type of the Siberian is rounded, they have a triple-coat to withstand the coldest of climates, and they are somewhat smaller than a Maine Coon.

Q.  How large do Siberians get?

A.  A typical female should weigh between 10-12 pounds, while males can get up to around 20 pounds.  The average male that we have seen is 12 to 16 pounds.
