After more than fifty years’ research, one finding is clear. More than three quarters of those who undertake counselling find it beneficial. This has been assessed by client feedback, and a range of clinical measures. There is however, no clear overall ‘winner’ as to which of the many different approaches is most effective. Some approaches seem to be more effective than others for particular problems. A general finding is that the quality of what is called the ‘therapeutic relationship’ is a key ingredient for success. So, it is important for you to find the best person for you to work with. Someone who you are able to develop trust with, and who you feel is safe and competent to understand, support and challenge you.
