LNT PLAN

We are a community inside a larger society of activists, engaged in radical self-expression and radical self-reliance. We are aware of the waste we generate, both physically and energetically, and we take care that none of it affects the desert or our fellow citizens.

Barrio sssh! LNT Plan

Our LEAVE-NO-TRACE plan is our mutual commitment to a Nowhere experience with zero-impact on the planet. We all see taking care of the stage in which we play as our personal responsibility. We will all help each other remember and fulfill this commitment.

Our holistic approach is to not make a mess in the first place! What we hope is to live harmoniously with the land in which we are making our play/healing ground, and to return it to the same state that it was before we inhabited it. Of course we don't want to support excessive consumerism to create & hold this space for the Nowhere Festival citizens and our very own sssh! campers.

We want to buy just the absolute necessities.

We will always strive to bring what is useful AND ECONOMICALLY CONSCIOUS, store it intelligently, and dispose of it in it's proper place. MOOP is unsightly and naughty and we don't want our things ending in some other place.

Please browse our WISHLIST to see if you have one (or many) of the things listed, you could donate your stuff or your ideas to our barrio. We must bring things to be comfortable and to create a healing atmosphere, but in regards to purchasing or creating materials we are thinking about things from a sustainability perspective.

On philosophy: less is more

The sustainability plan = Responsibility

Let's all try to be LNT experts, Earth Guardians, Recycling Gurus.

Bring less stuff that doesn't matter and spend more time enjoying Nowhere. We'll certainly bring fun stuff like costumes, a dome, camping equipment, food, tea, water, all in one eco-friendly soap, art projects, massage tables, massage oil, exercise balls, pillows, linens, etc., things that allow us to interact and heal with our fellow citizens of Nowhere. But we don't want to waste our money foolishly.

On Eco-Friendly Toiletries & Habits

Please bring only eco-friendly, biodegradable, non-toxic, phosphate-free, vegetable based products, leave your toxic chemical products at home.

Understanding what is toxic is not always easy, please read your labels, avoid bring if you see any of the following ingredients: sodium laurilsulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS or NaDS). Besides being a possible a skin irritant and cancer causing chemical when used over time, it can be detrimental to plants and animal living in the earth. As general guide, if you don't recognize all the ingredients as something coming from nature it should not be trusted to go back into the earth at Nowhere.

SHOWERING, etc.

Try to be conservative, use as little soap and water as possible, we will have a communal loofa & sea sponge at the shower station that can be used for soap conservation. Just rinse after use. It is also useful to utilize a bucket at shower time to conserve water necessary for your shower, it can collect water that drips off of you and then be used for the soaping up portion of your cleansing routine, you can then use fresh water to rinse it all away. We will be providing "Dr. Bronner’s Pepperment 18 in 1 Uses” eco soap for body and hair, but you can also add a drop or 2 on a wet toothbrush to be used as toothpaste, or the same with water as mouth wash. Peperment is also a natural deodorant, so if you have no other natural deodorant for the festival, just a daily wash with Dr. Bronner's should be suffice. In fact you don't have to bring any toiletries if you want to use our Dr. Bronner's Magic soap it can serve all your needs.

Consider using non-toxic insect repellant. DEET is a moderate chemical pesticide and may not be suitable for use in and around water sources (Wikipedia). Studies have shown eucalyptus-based repellents which contain the natural oil eucalyptol to be a highly effective and nontoxic alternative to DEET.

Please make sure that all stuff is stowed securely in our, structures, dome, tents or vehicles so it won't blow away or carried away.

Things we all SHOULD do:

  • Minimize packaging before we go to Nowhere
  • Not dump untreated graywater anywhere, some of it can go in the toilets, it can be recycled, filtered and reused in our earthen refrigeration system, it can go through a rigorous evaporation process or carried out and dumped in a septic system (gray water = shower water, dish water)
  • Not spit toothpaste on the ground
  • Use eco-friendly toiletries, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
  • Use TOILET STRUCTURES for body waste and toilet paper. Compost & toothpaste is OK in the porta-pottie (that is if you can get past the idea of brushing your teeth in an outhouse)
  • If TOILET STRUCTURES are not ready when you arrive a 6 inch hole must be dug in the shrubbery of the landscape for your waste, this includes pee, when you finish it should be covered with earth. Avoid putting paper, tampons, pads, wet wipes, etc. into the earth, animals will just dig it up, so pack out your paper and products.
  • Not burn anything.
  • Not bring any of the following:
    • pistachios or any other nuts in shells
    • feather boas or other clothing with bits that can come off in the wind
    • loose glitter or glitter glued to artwork unless it is sealed with a clearcoat (e.g. clear krylon spray paint).
    • confetti or anything like it! Bad! No!!
    • clothing or artwork with bits that always fly off in the wind
    • individually wrapped candies (generates lots of tiny trash)
  • Collect all our everything (trash, equipment, etc.) and take it away from Nowhere site grounds.
  • Clean up our personal camp space, including all debris, stakes in the ground, etc.
  • Keep our gear inside our structures, vehicles and tents and be ready to close them up in case of a wind/rain storm.
  • At the onset of any storm, secure the domes and tents as quickly as possible.

Opportunities to even the score

The truth is that despite our best efforts some of our debris will blow away, so we need to actively look for opportunities to even the score before we can achieve anything close to zero net impact.

  • We Pick up MOOP (matter-out-of-place) wherever we see it
  • We find a gentle way to raise the awareness of anyone else who litters. Maybe just smile and say "Here, let me pick that up for you."

Our Commitment to Leave No Trace

To minimize our impact on the earth/planet/site, we will follow these rules:

Before the event

· We pledge to Leave No Trace in and around our campsite, including our own and others’ waste.

· We will read the survival guide and LNT tips.

· We will complete this camp’s Leave No Trace Plan and share it with the entire camp.

· We will plan the assembly and take down of our structures and decorations

· We will inventory vehicle space so we can pack out everything

· We will take the packaging off of just about everything and stock up on reusable products and containers

· We will shop wisely

· We will bring no cheap trinkets, small feathers, and anything that might get left or be dangerous on the site and it's inhabitants

During the event

· We will check our camp daily

· We will clean as we go, realizing that any trash or MOOP (matter out of place) can blow away or be buried at any moment

· We will keep our recyclables, rubbish, etc. clearly separated for easy disposal

· We will recycle our aluminum, either on-site or back home

· We will have special cleanup crews for any high traffic activities we host and take care of any trash left by guests, invited or otherwise

· We won’t leave trash in or around the port-o-potties

· We will keep all items tied or weighted down

· We will encourage members of our camp to carry a personal trash (MOOP) container and a cigarette butt container when they are outside camp

After the event

· We will put aside time and have designated volunteers for the final cleanup

· We will take all trash in sealed containers to a landfill and recyclables to a recycle center on the way home

· We will leave extra space in every vehicles, knowing that repacking will inevitably take up more space and ensure that no items can detach during the ride home

· We will pack out everything, including any unevaporated gray water and scum

· We won’t put trash in or around the port-o-potties

· We will help out our neighbors and fellow citizens

We will be Good Neighbors

· We will encourage our guests to bring their own beverage containers

· We will help out our neighbors

· We will adopt the space around our camp, making sure that it stays traceless

· We will help careless or forgetful campers
