ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

Full Participation = Every Camper + Commitment = Light Load

Limited Participation = Some Campers x Huge Workload = Burnout

Barrio sssh! is a collaborative/community project. As part of this project you will be part of the team looking after the barrio. As long as everyone contributes, the work is evenly spread and there isn't much for each individual to do.

HOW THE BARRIO WORKS

  • You are welcome on site from 8th July. During this day you will need to feed and water yourself. Please do not arrive earlier than 8th July unless you are on the build team. You will not be allowed on site.
  • Meals start with breakfast on Tuesday 9th July and finish with breakfast on Monday 15th July. During these days all your food and water is provided.
  • There is approx. 8 litres of water per person per day.
  • Every day there is a serve yourself breakfast, plus lunch (approx. 1pm) and dinner (approx 8pm).
  • Everyone will cook and clean once in a group of up to four. There is a sign-up list so you can choose when you cook and clean, and with whom.
  • Our food is vegetarian, and mostly vegan (given that we cannot store dairy in our earth fridge). However, our kitchen is not 100% vegan or gluten-free, so please be prepared to be flexible. We always do our best to accommodate everyone.
  • You are welcome to bring food treats/extras for personal use or to share, including meat products. We have no ban on meat, save for ingredients in communal meals.
  • Our food is stored in an earth fridge. As with all the tasks, we will all look after it together so there is little for any one individual to do.
  • Sssh! has two showers you can use as often as you like. Bring your own shampoo etc. We ask that you do not use excessive amounts of water.
  • We are well known as a barrio that offers massage, so we ask that everyone offer their hands for two two-hour massage slots during the week. Those in the massage team will offer more. If you are new to massage you can join our daily massage workshops.
  • Everyone will also be part of one barrio team (massage, workshops, maintenance etc) that will help the barrio run smoothly.
  • We have a communal eating and chill-out space, shade/quiet space, plus one large geodesic dome for workshops and six massage spaces.
  • In the spirit of being NowHere, we ask that the communal areas are all mobile free zones. We also ask that you are mindful if you wish to smoke.
  • We ask that everyone who camps with sssh! run a workshop. You don't have to be an expert. Nowhere is a place to grow, challenge yourself and share your skills - whatever they are. Our workshop space is a place to experiment, share and have fun. Just remember to bring any specific items you might need to run your workshop. We provide the space, you fill it.
  • You are welcome to spend as much or little time as you wish in the barrio space. It is your home during Nowhere.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING / DO

  • Bring everything you would normally bring on a camping trip (tent, sleeping bag, torch, towel etc), except for food and water.
  • It's important you bring your own tent. If you do not want to bring a tent that is fine, however, the geodesic dome is not a bedroom and is not to be used for sleeping. It is space to be used night and day for meditation and groups.
  • You need to bring your own plate, bowl, cup (ideally with a clip you can attach to your clothing) and cutlery. You will wash this yourself after every meal.
  • Bring your own sun screen, mosquito spray, contraceptives and medical supplies. Sssh! will not provide these.
  • There is a lot of dust at Nowhere, so don't bring anything you're not prepared to get a little trashed. A nice idea is to have a dust sheet inside your tent you can shake off each day.
  • During the night, it can get slightly chilly and sometimes there are strong thunderstorms, so bring a light waterproof or jacket.
  • Sssh! will not provide alcohol. You are free to bring this, however our fridge system is for barrio food and drinks only. We will have a cool box for communal drinks.
  • As much as I'd like to be able to help everyone get to the site, we are not a taxi service, so please organise your own transportation to and from Nowhere. Check the Nowhere website.
  • Please keep personal items in your own tent. Items you wish to share can be placed in the communal spaces.
  • At Nowhere everyone tries very hard to leave no trace. This means that if you drop something, even a pea from your plate, you pick it up and put it with the waste. This way the site remains amazing.
  • Please take any empty bottles, cans and waste that you bring to Nowhere home with you. Every barrio has to manage its own waste. We will manage the barrio waste, you manage your personal waste.
  • Please read the Nowhere survival guide here if this is your first trip.

PLEASE BRING AT LEAST ONE ITEM TO SHARE

During your time with sssh! you will be part of a small community, so please bring as many of the following items as you can to make your Nowhere experience as comfortable and fun as possible:

  • Pillows, blankets and sheets - when everyone brings one pillow and/or blanket we have a really comfortable dome and chill out/dining space.
  • Camping chairs, stools, anything to sit on - if you have something cosy to sit on, please bring it.
  • Games, such as chess, backgammon, a pack of cards. These are always great fun.
  • Oil for massage - again, if everyone brings a little we'll have lots to share. Grape seed or extra virgin oil olive work well.
  • Hammocks to hang in the dome.
  • Your favourite teas and other drinks to share.
  • Decorations for the barrio - dream catchers, anything you'd like to see hung up.
  • A small sound system to play chill out/ambient music - please get in touch if you have one to bring.

Over the weekend before Nowhere starts a small team will build the sssh! structures. What we create is the frame, but you make it home.

Please bring something from the list. This way we'll have a really comfortable camp we can all enjoy.

On the first day of Nowhere (Tuesday) we will have a group meeting to go over the running of the barrio and make sure everything is clear. It is then up to everyone together to look after the barrio.

If things do not work because people do not do their tasks, then that person / those people are answerable to everyone.

When everyone plays their part the barrio will run very easily and be a wonderful home for everyone during Nowhere.

See you in the dust,

Andrew, Shania and the whole of sssh!
