Up and Coming Events January 2022
Hi All
On Saturday 29th January we would like to hold a Seed Swap event between 12 and 2pm but to be viable we need donations in advance. Details have been sent out via WhatsApp and there will be posters up on site. We would also like to take the opportunity to combine this event with a Meet & Greet and encourage as many of you to get involved as possible as we have a large new intake of plot holders this year. With a wealth of questions and experience (good and bad) we would welcome contributions of your top questions and tips (up to 3 of each) to be emailed or handed to Karen, plot 42, (bubble778970@gmail.com) so that we can collate and compile ahead of the event - printable tips only please. As part of the afternoon items will also be available for sale such as tools, water butts, composers etc.
We would also like to see what interest there is again this year to bulk buy compost from longacres.
Longacres Peat Free, £6.00 or 2 for £10.00
Longacres Multipurpose, £4.00 or 3 for £10.00
Country Stable Manure,
£3.99 or 3 for £11.00
If there is enough interest we will look to put in an order early March. Please let me k ow by the 5 February if you are interested. If we get enough interest we get free delivery for orders over £800. If however we fall short we will need to add a small amount for delivery. Please let Karen know on bubble778970@gmail.com.
We would also like to offer straw this year. This will cost approximately £5:50 a bale. Again please reply if you are interested.
Finally just a reminder we do have some seed potatoes left for those that would still like them.
First early -Pentland Javelin
Second early-Charlotte Sold out bit if enough interest will try to add to the order.
Main - Picasso and Sarpo.
Please let Steve know on the barossa email.

Hi All
The skip was ordered and finally arrived today Monday 15 June. Could I first ask that nothing is place into it at this point.
As per our website dates for events we are due to work on the community garden this weekend, 20 June. The work party will be slightly different in that we will be filling the skip and starting where possible to either clear the items in the community garden or start to burn the items (ensuring no impact to the local housing.
We will start at 14:00 hrs and will hopefully be finished by 16:00 hrs. Look forward to catching up with you all.
To facilitate the plant swap There will be 2 ways to donate your spare plants.
1 we will be placing a table in front of the locked compound at around 2 o’clock today as part of the work party. Anyone wishing to swap plants can place them on the tables for people to either do a one to one swap or give a donation. To assist the process please use the following guidelines
minimum .25p per pot or donation as you see fit
Donations placed in tin
Label pots for ease of identification (wooden sticks will be on table to help)
If you want your pots back please mark them in some way and keep an eye out for them being returned
Please return all pots for owners to collect or site use
2 should you have items that you want to donate but need to be transplant from your allotment //or wish to put items out for people then please do the following
Place a bamboo cane or some form of identification that you have items to give away or use WhatsApp to tell people your plot number where items are (please do not reply to message just pop to see the plot holder)
Place items close to the front of your plot
Or indicate what you have that can be transplanted
Donations to be placed in tin at the locked compound
The swapping process will go on for the next week or two to allow people to still plant out and see what they have surplus.
All donations will be going towards the funding of the new shop or items for use on the site.
Any problems then please speak to a member of the committee.

Steve Burnell

Hi all
It appears that we have had a massive response from all of you in respect of placing wood, metal, glass and who new we had so many baths on the site. I did ask in my original news letter to ensure that all items were put in the piles by the 1 May. Whilst the committee are happy for the items to still be placed on to the hard standing area till the agreed date I need to ask that Please, Please NO MORE WOOD OR CUTTINGS especially green cuttings. Having looked at the pile and the bonfire they seem to have nearly joined together. This will as you can imagine take us quite a while to get rid of so if we stop placing on the pile now we can assess what we will be doing with whats there.
This is not a one off regards the skip so once we have cleared the bulk of what we now have, again we can re assess what we need in the future.
Regards
Steve

Mid-April Newsletter
Hi All
This is just a quick update for you on a few items. April is always a busy month at the allotment and we are heading rapidly towards the May rush.
Update on Skip
As we have not been able to action the skip, we have taken the decision to do the following:
· All metal should be placed on the hard-standing area within the pile already started. This will be taken away by a scrap metal company (BE CARFUL WITH SHARP EDGES).
· Wood and shrubs can be placed on the communal garden. Place on piles started not the big bonfire one.
· Please bag up any plastic and carpet and place on the hard standing at the back.
THIS IS ONLY FOR ITEMS FROM YOUR PLOT NOT FROM HOME
This will assist us in starting to clear plots and place quickly in the skip as soon as we can order one. Could I ask that nothing else is added after 1 May.
Sunflower Competition
Hopefully this is well underway but still plenty of time to plant those seeds.
Plant and Item Swap
This seems to be going well with people swapping seeds as well as plants and other items. If you have spare seeds at this time then please offer them up on the WhatsApp community group to assist people who are struggling to get any at the moment.
Barossa Site and Road
To keep the momentum going we are now also looking at the site as a whole. The first item on our list is the road way. Cars are clearly getting bigger and there seems to be a number of pinch points.
I will be asking individuals to carry out specific actions to assist us in being able to make it easier to continue to use the road around the site without causing impact to plot holders and vehicles.
Just a reminder that the roadway is one-way once you reach the car park. We would ask that this is also applied to all road users including children on bikes (although no bikes at this point please). A strict 5 mph speed limit should be adhered to. Stopping adjacent to your plot is allowed for unloading cars, then parked appropriately.
Other areas that we will be looking at are:
· The main entrance
· Barossa Road entrance
· The community garden – What would you like to see in this area? I am collating a wish list to enable our on-site expert Laara to come up with a plan. Please email me your ideas.
Water
Please remember to turn off taps fully once you have watered your plot. To assist in touching the tap area as little as possible tap connectors will be provided (please do not remove them).
Rhubarb
If you have rhubarb that you are happy for people to take then please let people know through WhatsApp or email me to spread the word. It has also been suggested that we look to donate some to either a hospice or NHS – any willing volunteers to coordinate let me know.
100 years
Yes, its official – Thanks to Anne Barton and Steve Hatfield for sharing the past history of the site recently with me. I can with confidence say that we now celebrate our 100th year. History shows that on the 4 May 1920 that 21 people had taken on plots at Barossa Allotments with a further 21 people asking to join. I hope to share more of this with you in the May newsletter and how we can celebrate in this difficult time.

Hi All
I just wanted to send out a reminder that the gate to the Barossa Allotment must be closed at all times. Whilst I understand that people may feel cautious about opening and closing the gate there is very little risk particularly if you wash your hands after entering the allotment and when you get home. This advice has been taken from The National Allotment Society and endorsed by Camberley & District Horticultural Society. The reason for continuing to close the gate at this time is to stop people entering the site who are not members and may not follow our processes for social distancing.
Should you have any issues then please feel free to talk or call any of the committee (details attached and on the notice board).

Hi All
Following yesterdays announcement the committee have continued to look for clarification on attendance to allotments. It was announced today by the Rt Hon Michael Gove that allotments can still be used as part of your exercise regime.
There has been a number of discussions within Camberley & District Horticultural Society and the Barossa Committee regards children attending allotments. Whilst we don’t want to stop people coming we have discussed that children must stay on your plot. Please no cycling around the site during this period and where possible try to keep to 2 people at the plot at a time. Can we also ask as children are potential supper carriers that they do not open or close the gate for you.
In respect of the gate we again have had a number of points raised about should we open in the morning leave it open and close at night (last person out). We feel at this point we may encourage non members to come in and start to use the site recreationally. Our current advice at the moment is use hand sanitiser on entry or exit, use gloves if you don’t have any and wash your hands with soap when you arrive on your plot and after you leave and get home. I would suggest a flask of warm water may assist the washing at the allotment. We will look to discuss the gate again as a committee and should this change we will let you know.
I have today had it agreed that we can turn the water back on early so that if you do not have a flask you can at least use cold water. In this instance then please take a bowl or bucket for personal use as the taps will obviously be a place for contamination.
I am sure that all of you will appreciate the precautions at this time. We will continue to monitor and update you all as we move ahead. Thank you all for your cooperation.

March News Letter
Dear All
As many of you would have seen through recent letters a meeting was held in January this year for all plot holders to attend. During the meeting many things were discussed including ideas regards focusing on community engagement of plot holders. The meeting also elected a new committee to enable the site to be supported moving forward. Sue as the current site representative (rep) took the decision to stand down as the site rep after 16 years and myself, Steve Burnell was elected by the new committee to take on the role.
As of the 1 March I will now be representing your thoughts and ideas for Barossa allotment. We will be setting up a number of events where we can all meet to share thoughts of what we would like as a community. You don’t have to wait though and if you would like to discuss anything please feel free to approach any of the committee. The new committee members are Alex Freeburn plot 11, Valerie Hogg Plot 9, Annette Cox Plot 4 and Peter Barnes Plot 45.
I would like to start my new position by thanking Sue for all of the work she has carried out over the years. To that end Sue also wanted to make sure that all moneys were collected for the 2020 season to release the burden from me as the new Rep, again I would like to thank Sue personally for all of the work carried out during the hand over period.
I am hoping to send out communications via email on a regular basis and you have been added to the list from the membership records. Should you wish to not be emailed then please let me know and I can remove you. I will not be sharing details to other plot holders and will always blind copy you in to protect your details. There will of course be a copy of all correspondence placed on the notice board for those that do not have email.
For those with smart phones we have already started a community WhatsApp group. This is to help people share ideas and general discussions. If you wish to be added to this then let any of the committee know and we can add your mobile number.
Hope to see you over the coming weeks and months.
Should you need to contact me please feel free to find me on Plot 30, email me – Barossa.allotment@gmail.com or call me on 07540419732
Regards
Steve Burnell
