2 Reg

History

Originally designated 2 Division Aviation Regiment, it was formed within the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR), in 1969, consisting of:

    • Regimental Headquarters at Lubbecke
    • 652 Squadron at Bunde
    • 659 Squadron at Osnabruck
    • 662 Squadron at Munster

The regiment's squadrons were attached to armoured cavalry regiments within 2 Division, acting as independent squadrons directly under operational command of armoured unit commanders.

At the end of 1976 the regiment was re-organized (with 659 Sqn AAC becoming part of 9 Regt AAC) and renamed 2 Regiment Army Air Corps. On 1 January 1983, under the re-organisation of 1 (British) Corps, 2 Reg was disbanded. 652 Sqn became part of 1 Reg and 662 Sqn became part of 3 Reg.

Current role

On 1 September 1994, 2 (Trg) Regt AAC was formed at the Army Air Corps Depot, Middle Wallop. The regiment's role was to provide ground training of AAC soldiers and consisted of a HQ Squadron and 668 (Training) Squadron.

On 1 July 2004, 676 Squadron was formed and became part of 2 Reg, managing all Phase 2 groundcrew training. The School of Army Aviation was retitled as the Army Aviation Centre, Middle Wallop, on 1 August 2009.

2 (Training) Regiment currently delivers all Army Air Corps groundcrew training:

    • Phase 2 Training (training Airtroopers to Class 3)
    • Phase 3 Training (Class 1 courses, Junior and Senior Command Courses and Command, Leadership and Management training)
    • Ground Support Commanders Course for Officers

It consists of two Squadrons:

    • 676 Squadron who manage the training
    • 668 (Training) Squadron who deliver the training.
