Beer Crawler is the original Pub or Bar Crawl Android App. It allows you to track your progress, and that of your friends, on crawls set up by you, or others. To start, you either join a crawl set up by someone else, or join one you have created yourself.
SETTING UP YOUR OWN BEER CRAWL
Click on Create New Beer Crawl. Here you will enter a User Name and Beer Key. A Beer Key is a one-word unique identifier for your Beer Crawl which you will share with others so they can join. Don't make it too easy to guess to avoid random people joining it by mistake. Next, you get the choice to either import an itinerary from a previous Beer Crawl, or start afresh. Importing from previous is usual if you plan to repeat a crawl on another day.
Next you need to add a name for the crawl (make it descriptive) and an optional description. Also add the correct date. Keep the public box ticked if you don't mind your crawl to be made public sometime in the future (maybe). Your username, or any progress made during the crawl, will never be made public.
Next you add and edit places in your itinerary. Places could be somewhere where you can drink or eat, or a significant mode of transport used between places, or something else (other). The only type of place where you and your friends can add drinks, and comments, and test drunkenness is the Pub / Bar. Details you can add to a place include start and stop time (essential for keeping the itinerary order correct).
Next you can edit the standard list of drinks provided to users when they add drinks. You can edit this if you know, for example, that lots of these places serve a certain type of drink. Users can then be more specific about what they are drinking. Drinks are grouped together, with each group having their own set of sizes to choose from.
That's it! Now just share the Beer Key to your friends! Note, this crawl may be deleted from our servers if no-one joins it after the set date.
JOINING A BEER CRAWL
Once you have your Beer Key (ask the Beer Crawl organiser), you are ready to join. You can only join on the day before a crawl is set to take place. To join, Click on Join Beer Crawl on the main page. You will be required to enter 3 things:
1. A User Name - this should be unique and difficult to guess - it will not be shared with anyone. You will need this to rejoin later if you leave prematurely.
2. The Beer Key.
3. A Nickname - this will be used to display your progress to others on the Beer Crawl - be imaginative if you like!
You will now be taken to the progress updating part of the App this time, and everytime you open the App. You can leave a Beer Crawl when you are done by returning to the Main page from the menu, then clicking on Leave. If you leave by accident, you can re-join (ONLY ON THE SAME PHONE).
UPDATING YOUR PROGRESS
Once joined, you can see 5 progress screens by swiping your finger left and right. The first of these is where you update your progress. When you arrive at a pub or bar for a drink, tap the tick button on the far left of the screen - you have now 'checked-in'! A Pencil button will appear. Tap this to add more progress information such as:
1. How you are feeling right now (eg. drunk as a skunk!). This will then be visible next to your name in the friend list, or in the share text (e.g. Rob is currently drunk as a skunk).
2. A remark about the place you are in - to be used as a memory aid to recall anything from funny conversation you are having to the amazing wall paper.
3. Any drinks you have so you can keep a record for later, and compete with others. You can add your own drinks if one is missing from the default list.
4. Reminder to leave - this will play an alarm sound (and vibrate) at your chosen time to remind you to leave to get to the next place.
5. Drunkenness score - play a short game to measure your reaction time (found by many to be a good indication of intoxication - THOUGH SHOULD NOT BE USED TO DETERMINE IF YOU CAN DRIVE)! This can only be done once for a pub/bar.
If you forget to check-in, you can check-in at any time. You can edit your check-in time so you keep an accurate record of the day. Be sure to check-in in order however, as other friends may use this to see which pub/bar you were last in.
All progress information (except your reminder setting) will be shared with others on the Beer Crawl. If you don't want to share anything, then don't enter it!
Now you can swipe to the right to see your list of friends and their progress (tap on a friend to see more information).
Continuing to swipe right, you can share your current progress on Facebook (directly), or in other ways such as twitter and Google+ (as long as you have those apps installed on your phone). You can also send an email of the entire day's progress.
Next you can chat with people on the same Beer Crawl as you. This can be used to encourage people into the bar you are in, to order drinks from people who are ahead of you, or to just have some fun! Again all chat messages are shared with all othes on that Beer Crawl.
Finally you can see a graph of everyone's drunkenness. This is either in raw reaction time, or in percentage increase since the first test was taken.
Use the menu to login to or logout from Facebook, change your nickname, cancel any reminder alarms, see any more Crawl notes, or return to the main menu.
Refresh any data to / from the servers using the refresh button at the top (a data connection is required).
FINALLY
You can see older Beer Crawl progress (as long as it is still on your phone) by clicking on View old Beer Crawls from the main page.
Individual or all Beer Crawls can be deleted from the menu on the main page.
All progress data will be deleted from our servers (not your phone) after 1 week. Progress will be lost from your phone also if you uninstall this app.
If you enjoy the app, please rate and comment on it in the Android Marketplace by clicking the button above. Also if you want to provide any other feedback, please email us using the button above. Finally, please like our Facebook App and add a comment by clicking the other button above.
