Tweet: Wonderful, joyous, beautiful, thrilling sounds this evening from #HannahFoster, #JohnCameron and @BachEnEdinburgh. Thank you all, and thanks to #Bach, #Vivaldi & #Handel, for an evening of glorious music-making @EastgateTheatre.
Congratulations on a superb concert! I thoroughly enjoyed every piece, though again was more drawn to the Bach because of the quality of the music itself. But I was also surprised by how much I liked the Vivaldi - vigorously performed and full of feeling. Having a birds-eye view also meant I could appreciate more keenly each of the musicians. Very sensitive and moving. Also in the Brandenburg your pianist was impressive and reminded me that the high quality of the ensemble often meant taking for granted the strength of the individuals. A very satisfying evening indeed.
Another really successful programme. I really think the mix is perfect with both Vivaldi and Handel scoring well by being heard in measured doses. Nice venue with a fairly dry acoustic but all the lines were clearly projected. The size of the ensemble and seeing the music being made, helps my appreciation of the interplay between the instruments in all the works. I thought the soloists were all on top of their game tonight- Clare in the Vivaldi, Sheena and Robert in the double with nicely contrasting tones, John Cameron was outstanding on the piano - what a great performance of the cadenza! - and, of course, Hannah Fosterin the Bach. The trio of violin, piano and flute in the Brandenburg was a highlight for me. Obviously space was cramped with the piano to the fore but it all came off well. Nice sound from all the strings throughout. You all were great advocates for the Baroque - there was plenty of character, colour and rhythm in the different dance movements. Another highlight was the playing in the Vivaldi slow movements - very expressive. Bravo! An evening well spent. Thanks
From Music in Peebles:
"October's concert, by the Bach Ensemble of Edinburgh, was a great success, with another large audience and another high rating (4.79 out of 5). The highlight of the concert for most people was the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.5, which enters our all-time 'top 10'.
The general view seemed to be that it is very welcome to have a larger ensemble like this from time to time. It certainly generates a sense of excitement to see the Eastgate stage so well filled - the greatest number of musicians we've had, I think, since the 13-strong Scottish Wind Ensemble played the Mozart 'Gran Partita' in February 2015."
