Facebook: Yes, another varied programme played with verve. I think the Canongate Kirk acoustic suits Vivaldi's music perfectly. The programme was excellent.. The CPE Bach cello concerto was a fascinating contrast in style, while Brandenburg 3 ended the concert with the Ensemble in sparkling form. Well done!

Tweet: Superb concert of Bach, Vivaldi and Handel given by @BachEnEdinburgh in the historic Canongate Kirk as part of the Fringe Festival. This talented group perform a different programme of works by the same baroque masters in the same venue on Thursday 18 Aug at 7.30. I can't wait.
Great concert this evening! Nice balance in the Bach; IO thought Sheena Jardine and Robert Dick were excellent in the Vivaldi; Electra Lochhead - wow! Handel movements were nicely characterised. A winning programme.

Tweet: Wonderful, joyous, beautiful, thrilling sounds this evening from #HannahFoster, #JohnCameron and @BachEnEdinburgh. Thank you all, and thanks to #Bach, #Vivaldi & #Handel, for an evening of glorious music-making @EastgateTheatre.
Congratulations on a superb concert! I thoroughly enjoyed every piece, though again was more drawn to the Bach because of the quality of the music itself. But I was also surprised by how much I liked the Vivaldi - vigorously performed and full of feeling. Having a birds-eye view also meant I could appreciate more keenly each of the musicians. Very sensitive and moving. Also in the Brandenburg your pianist was impressive and reminded me that the high quality of the ensemble often meant taking for granted the strength of the individuals. A very satisfying evening indeed.
Another really successful programme. I really think the mix is perfect with both Vivaldi and Handel scoring well by being heard in measured doses. Nice venue with a fairly dry acoustic but all the lines were clearly projected. The size of the ensemble and seeing the music being made, helps my appreciation of the interplay between the instruments in all the works. I thought the soloists were all on top of their game tonight- Clare in the Vivaldi, Sheena and Robert in the double with nicely contrasting tones, John Cameron was outstanding on the piano - what a great performance of the cadenza! - and, of course, Hannah Fosterin the Bach. The trio of violin, piano and flute in the Brandenburg was a highlight for me. Obviously space was cramped with the piano to the fore but it all came off well. Nice sound from all the strings throughout. You all were great advocates for the Baroque - there was plenty of character, colour and rhythm in the different dance movements. Another highlight was the playing in the Vivaldi slow movements - very expressive. Bravo! An evening well spent. Thanks
From Music in Peebles:
"October's concert, by the Bach Ensemble of Edinburgh, was a great success, with another large audience and another high rating (4.79 out of 5). The highlight of the concert for most people was the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.5, which enters our all-time 'top 10'.
The general view seemed to be that it is very welcome to have a larger ensemble like this from time to time. It certainly generates a sense of excitement to see the Eastgate stage so well filled - the greatest number of musicians we've had, I think, since the 13-strong Scottish Wind Ensemble played the Mozart 'Gran Partita' in February 2015."

Tweet: GREAT playing tonight. I thoroughly enjoyed your concert.
When I first attended a Bach Ensemble of Edinburgh Concert I was taken aback by the standard of musicianship. I now regularly attend your concerts because of the quality of the music you play and the clever programming and interesting soloists. I loved both concerts this week; the playing was crisp but reflective and the interaction between all the performers really striking. I look forward to attending many more concerts.

Tweet: Terrific concert last night! We loved it all!
I thought that was an incredibly strong set of performances this evening, played with confidence and feeling. My personal favourite was the Bach keyboard concerto which I thought was quite wonderfully performed, but the whole programme was great and made me feel good about the world.
What a grand concert that was at Canongate Kirk last night! The energy and interplay of parts in Handel and Bach is just wonderful. Perhaps I was a bit too close to the players to get the best benefit of balance but what a wonderful acoustic the church has-ideally suited to that size of ensemble. The soprano soloist was new to me but what a voice and musicianship! Beautifully sustained long notes and great agility in the runs. I was amused by the variety of instruments used by your keyboard player. I half expected him to turn up with hurdy-gurdy for an encore. The little chamber organ is quite a gem. While I am not a period pedant, I do rather prefer forte piano or harpsichord rather than a modern grand for Bach. As for the strings you seem to have a wonderful rapport and great enjoyment in playing together and swapping desks. It's always interesting to watch the eyes for reactions to the music and not just cues. I will certainly look out for any future concerts of the Bach Ensemble of Edinburgh! Thank you for reminding me of this concert!
What a gorgeous experience it was to be in the audience at last night’s Concert. It was not only supreme technical virtuosity, but also joyous performing, in which I as an audience member felt involved and enraptured by the music you made. The Bach sounded so energising and natural. Electra sounded and looked so wonderful, she is definitely One To Watch!
The Edinburgh Bach Ensemble was a treat of glorious string playing, a dance through Bach’s keyboard concerto and the most wonderful performance of Handel’s Salve Regina. My mind is refreshed!

Tweet: Throughly enjoyed the concert, sparkling brilliance, lots of colour and contrasts. Impressive harpsichord and piano skills an added bonus. Thank you to all @BachEnEdinburgh
I enjoyed the concert hugely, the programme worked very well. The size of the band was ideal in that acoustic, coupled with very good balanced sound, meant that lines in the music were picked out clearly. In the opening Handel Concerto Grosso that struck me immediately. Also the interplay between soloists and soloists and the rest of the ensemble was very well done. All the pieces had a fine “pulse” and the ensemble was impressive. The piano playing in the Bach was superb. Although it was a piano being used, it didn’t swamp everyone else and in fact Richard Beauchamp was very much a member of the band. Certainly I enjoyed this live performance of the Bach more than my vinyl recordings of Bach concerti using harpsichord.

Another super concert. I thought the flautist was superb, is she really only 21? Great playing from her and the entire band which is a terrific outfit. And clearly you are building a reputation, as again the audience was large. I did not know the Vivaldi pieces and enjoyed them all especially No.5 tonight.
Thanks to you all for an excellent evening's entertainment
Well done for another fine performance. I really enjoyed it. The flautist was utterly outstanding. Other highlights were No.5 first movement of the Vivaldi (particularly Sheena - her playing has a unique tone and every note was meticulously executed). No.6 Largo was beautiful and the Brandenburg was very enjoyable - lots to keep the ear's attention.
An excellent concert. I enjoyed it all. Thank you and congratulations to all performers.

That was a simply wonderful concert last night at Traquair! Though I had heard some of the pieces (especially the ones Bach played with!) I had never realised the sequence which made it more cohesive. The ensemble was brilliant – you played like one instrument, though each had a distinctive voice. And the energy was amazing! Vivaldi certainly puts in the notes! It was fun, it was beautiful and it was really something special!

I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. You are a very classy outfit. A really tight lean band! It was a great choice of music beautifully played with some truly excellent soloists. Many congratulations.
I felt the need to send you an email following my attendance at the concert last night, performed by the Bach Ensemble of Edinburgh as part of the Fringe Festival programme of activities.
I sat in the second row at Cannongate Kirk and have to say I absolutely loved both the pieces chosen to perform, and indeed the standard of playing, which blew me away. Although I am a freelance child and adolescent forensic psychologist/director of my own company based on the South coast of England, my first career choice was to become a professional musician (I used to play clarinet, baroque recorder(s) and piano until the age of 18, when I decided to rebel against my parents and study to be a psychologist instead of a professional musician. I left music behind until the age of 30, when I returned to my passion, re-training on the oboe and gaining my ATCL diploma in the space of 2 years, and more recently learning the concert grand harp, which I am currently working towards ABRSM Grade 8 at the grand old age of 42. Baroque music is one of my passions due to being exposed to this music more frequently as a result of now playing oboe and harp, and I have to say I was thrilled to see the programme you had put together as an ensemble, which tickled the musical tastebuds without doubt.
As I left the concert, I mentioned to the double bassist and cellist what an awesome concert you had performed and that I truly believed that you could charge more than a mere 10 or 11 pounds for such a high standard of playing from a great group of musicians. As an ensemble, you gave your audience a performance that simply oozed spirit, skill, sensitivity, and soul, with a robust sense of group cohesion when playing; to have been able to experience this was fantastic. When I am back in the city in the future and the ensemble are performing, I will be there!
Best wishes and please do pass on my email to the other players in your ensemble. On a final note, I have to say during the Bach Orchestral Suite I had complete empathy with your 2 oboists, given such pieces are very physically demanding on the body – they did a corking job and when the suite ended, I took a deep breath in and thought ‘phew’, as I know full well how much it can feel like both the tongue and lungs have collapsed after performing such pieces!
Well done, take good care and keep playing fabulous music together – a very talented group of musicians.
