"Things go badly when you deny the gods."

"Ril Dyarans were not, broadly speaking, particularly religious. They were devout and respectful, but not in the sense
that Maera would find herself ardently wearing a path to and from the local sanctuary. Rather, enough that folk stories
and superstitious customs were considered good, sound advice for those among her station. Stories and lore permeated her life
in small, subtle ways, almost unknown until she’d find herself repeating a saying, or marking a tree just so, or ensuring that her spoon
moved only widdershins when making a soup. It was old, common wisdom. There were spirits who had to be appeased, and
forces of the world — named or not — that, time to time, demanded obeisance. It was known among those who toiled in the field
that when the gods — such as they were — brought you onto a path, laid signposts before you, and lended a light push…
you damn well started walking."

Ril Dyara is, as previously mentioned, a pragmatic society, where religion does not have the sway over most people as in the Middle Ages of our world. In this land, who or what you pray to is your business, and few would start a heated debate, let alone a war, over theological differences. This stands in stark contrast to its neighbors, where religion is woven into the very fabric of society; Leikonsir in particular is practically a theocracy, and the overtly pious nature of many Leikons is often mocked by worldly Ril Dyarans.
The devout among the Ril Dyarans, however, pay homage to a menagerie of deities, guardian spirits, personifications of intangibles, and the like — local and foreign both. While religion is evoked (especially by the upper classes) for purposes of conveying legitimacy and credibility, and places of worship like temples and shrines do exist, what Ril Dyaran clergy there is maintain their relevance through good works more than any claim to divine communion or authority.
Religions and deities that have featured in the World in Sunder so far are described below.
