Obtaining Funding for Collaborative Research
Funding to support collaborative research should be considered early in a mathematical career, so it is important to take the opportunity to negotiate funding for extended visits to meet with a collaborator when you are accepting an academic position or being promoted to associate professor. Also take advantage of any pre-sabbatical opportunities at your college/university. There is likely to be other established internal funding mechanisms from your institution for research support. Often these internal awards are advertised as opportunities to purchase materials/supplies for bench scientists and can easily be reallocated for travel. Encourage faculty at your institution to write such extended travel funding into research and training grants as a way to build research infrastructure. Some external funding opportunities include AWM travel grants, Ford Foundation, Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, and AMS-Simons Travel Grants.
