The focus of the course is learning how to design an online course based on authentic learning principles. This course is designed to be delivered fully online as a FREE professional development opportunity for higher education lecturers, teachers and/or tutors interested in learning how to apply an authentic learning framework to a new or existing online course. The course is not intended to concentrate on technical matters of how to use particular computer systems but instead aims to provide an introduction to the use of real-life tasks where students use technologies as powerful cognitive tools for learning.
This website provides a framework for participants to perform an authentic task with real-world relevance. It is ill-defined and participants will identify multiple ways of designing an online course based upon their area of teaching, student cohort and their selected learning pedagogies and technologies. Identifying a suitable task and support resources for their own unit of learning will require some thought, effort, time and access to computers with internet connections. It is advisable to commence the task about 6 weeks before the start of semester, so that participants have sufficient time to implement their plan if they desire.
The task is designed primarily as an individual task, however, there are opportunities in the course for participants to network and share their thoughts and ideas with their peers. If participants are working in the same teaching area they might like to work collaboratively on the same unit of learning or design consecutive units of learning.
Participants should be encouraged to put themselves in the position of their students and use their imagination to create interesting and engaging learning experiences where their students can create polished professional products that would be useful in the world of work. Due to university constraints participants may need to break the overall task into two or three sub-tasks for assessment purposes.
Most of the content, supports and resources for this course are accessible from this website which is open to the public (open access environment). Participant enrolments, profiles, assessment details and other confidential information are located on the Moodle eDesign course (LMS - closed environment).
Please contact me if you have any suggestions for improving this website or if you have an authentic learning task that you would like to share.
