Users can access this part of the database through the below spatial interfaces, or Web maps, by zooming in on an area or voyage of interest, panning, and clicking on daily position, route, and place symbols. Clicking on the "View Larger Map" link below any of the Web maps will open it in the free ArcGIS Online viewer and make possible additional functions, such as being able to turn layers on or off and access the underlying tabular data, as well as modify the Web map and save it to a free ArcGIS Online account. Users with ArcGIS 10 installed on their computers can enjoy the full functionality of the GIS (such as searching for and selecting particular vessels, captains, or cargoes) by downloading it as map packages called Tasajo_GIS.mpk and Tasajo_and_hurricanes_GIS.mpk from the Downloads page. For more details and background, see the Project Overview pages, especially those on methods, data, and Web mapping.
Access the Catalan Tasajo Voyages, 1837-1900
This Web map shows the routes of fourteen voyages by twelve Catalan vessels from the mid to late nineteenth century. For the most part, they carried manufactured goods, wine, and other Catalan products from Barcelona to Buenos Aires or Montevideo. There they loaded tasajo, a type of salt beef used as food for enslaved Africans on sugar plantations in Cuba. Once in Cuba, they either loaded sugar or aguardiente, a type of cane alcohol, and returned to Barcelona; or they proceeded in ballast for ports in the US South, like Charleston, and loaded cotton for the textile mills of Barcelona. The legend displays the types of cargo carried by each vessel on different segments of each voyage. Clicking on the daily-position symbols opens a pop-up box with detailed data on many other variables.
Temporally Animate the Tasajo Trail, 1837-1900
This map allows users to view the voyages through time. Note that only the voyage of the Teresina (1837-38) occurs before 1851. The other thirteen all occur between 1851 and 1900. Analyze Interactions Between the Catalan Voyages and Hurricanes, 1851-1900
This map allows users to view the voyages and hurricane tracks through time. Because the hurricane data begin only in 1851, the voyage of the Teresina (1837-38) has been removed. If the embedded version below does not run due to browser compatibility issues, you can switch browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox), change security settings, or (best of all) simply view the Web map or the Web mapping application directly on ArcGIS Online.
