A brave effort from the Studs wasn't enough to get the Studs into a third successive Superleague final, as a Seb Cooley-inspired WHOREFC won conincingly 4-2 to take their spot in the final against the Desperados.

Quarter final action and a potential banana skin for the Studs. At least on paper it might have been, but skipper Julian Black had not been able to field his strongest quartet at any stage of the regular season and, unfortunately for him, wasn’t able to do so here either. That was disappointing for the match as a contest, but good news individually for North Oxford’s Mandie Barnes and schoolboy Daniel Arwas, starting in the knockout stages of the Superleague for the first time. Ralph Morgan and Ian Mitchell completed the class for the Academy, but the Studs’ found their stride quickly and their foursome of Laurie Brock, Jeremy Hindle, Gareth Hoskins and Justin Shaw conceded only 17 points across the six games in the rubber. “Boomer” Hindle and Shaw were particularly ruthless in game six, shutting out Barnes and Arwas and proving there was no love lost between the North Oxford teammates with the Superleague at stake!

So keen are the Studs for WSSL match practice, they turned up last Wednesday with a man to spare! Fortunately for them, Fivercide were firing on three cylinders and gratefully accepted the services of Gareth Hoskins, slotting him in at the top of Phil Lyndon’s pecking order. Hoskins teamed up with Lyndon in the first rotation against Laurie Brock and Rob Wilson. And it was the Studs, barely out of short trousers, who won a well-contested match against their more experienced rivals 15-9. Aldenham Ace, Chris Austin and Old Citizen Alex Nice completed the Fivercide line-up, as they met “Boomer” Hindle and Spencer Chapman on the second court. Although more closely matched in aggregate age, thanks to the presence of the Club Patron, it was the Studs who took advantage of a fast start to show a clean pair of heels to their rivals. The second rotation saw fairly routine wins for the Studs, but the top match of the rubber in Rotation 3 produced a really good contest between Hoskins and his North Oxford teammate Austin, against Brock and Hindle. Quality play all round took the scores level at nine apiece, before the tenacity and power of the Studs proved just too much for the more mature Fivercide pair. Rob Wilson showcased his talent once again in the 6th match to complete the Studwash.

J.Shaw & S.Chapman beat W.Betts & J.Hammond 15-9

This was Superleague action at its finest - two well-matched teams battling it out for top spot in Conference A. Warrior Whizz, Freddie Rowe, wielded his axe over the fit and in-form Redmond sisters to field his strongest possible team against a Studs line-up with a “long-looking tail”. That anyway was WSSL Ref Ryan Perrie’s opinion as he boldly predicted a “4-2 or 5-1 win for the Warriors”. For much of the match that verdict looked just about right. The Warriors quartet of Pete Cohen, Tom Fletcher, Will Betts and James Hammond won the first two games and were at level pegging most of the way through Rotation 2, but inspired by the tenacious Laurie Brock at 1 and “Boomer” Hindle at 2, the Studs fought back to bring the rubber all square at 2-2. The Studs were bucking now, they had reeled the Warriors in and weren’t about to let them off the hook. Even Club veterans Justin Shaw and Spencer Chapman found renewed vigour and the prairie unit fairly galloped through their games in Rotation 3, winning them to 8 and 9. The tail had wagged.

L.Brock & G.Hoskins beat C.Cooley & K.Hird 15-6

J.Hindle & H.Allan beat E.Scoones & M.Barnes 15-11

The Studs maintained their 100% record with a 6-0 Badger-baiting on Tuesday night. Chief Stud Chapman was absent and rang the changes with Gareth Hoskins and Laurie Brock returning to the starting line-up and Oxford student Harriet Allan making her Superleague debut. The Honey Badger cake at the back of the court was a mere consolation as the Badgers line-up of Charlotta Cooley, Karen Hird, Mandie Barnes and ex-Stud Emily Scoones were unable to register on the scoreboard. Star Stud performer of the evening was undoubtedly Harriet, who raced into Golden Glove contention by nailing the ball in the hole a remarkable four times in her first ever Superleague rotation and followed that up by finishing with a three out of three record for the evening. The Badgers took their mauling philosophically and are looking to their crucial encounter with Fivercide next week.

WHOREFC found their heads in a spin back at Super League HQ on Wednesday night. Just off the plane from a successful tour of Provence, the Windsor & Eton outfit looked a little undercooked for a tough encounter with shire rivals, the Studs. Despite missing their marquee player, Seb Cooley, WHOREFC still fielded the strong quartet of Harry Turnbull, Jurgen Hutter, Johnny Saunders and Karl Wagner, and in the first rotation of matches it was really just the rub of the green that saw the Studs’ race to a 2-0 lead. Jeremy Hindle and Justin Shaw were outstanding in the third match to claim a runaway 15-3 victory over Turnbull and Wagner, but the going in Match 4 was much tougher for Robert Wilson (making his Stud debut) and Spencer Chapman against Hutter and Saunders. WHOREFC took the early honours to ease to a 5-1 lead, before trading points to 9 all. Some superb cutting from Rob Wilson deprived the Whores of any real point-scoring opportunities thereafter and the Studs were able to close out the game at 15-10. The third rotation saw more strong performances from Stud thoroughbreds Wilson & Hindle (15-7 against Turnbull and Hutter), and a workmanlike display from Shaw & Chapman to secure the sixth point for the boys in blue.
