We would like to thank all the presenters for sharing their work at the poster session and in the science sessions. We greatly appreciated the chance for everyone to meet and share research. One of our main goals in the Eastern NY Branch is fostering relationships among the Eastern NY (and surrounding area) scientists and we believe we achieved this goal at our regional meeting thanks to your participation!
Current president of the ASM Eastern NY branch Eric Yager, PhD introducing our keynote speaker to a packed house!
The Keynote Speaker is a member of the American Society for Microbiology Distinguished Lecturer Program. Which provides funding for distinguished speakers to come to ASM events!
Keynote speaker Cheryl Nickerson, PhD from the Biodesign Institute at the Arizona State university gave a very engaging talk about how she got to where she is now, including how she came to her collaboration with NASA, as well as how 3D cell culture expands what we know about host pathogen interactions in a variety of tissues and pathogens.
Students from SUNY Polytechnic, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, University at Albany, the UAlbany School of Public Health and the Wadsworth Center got the chance to have lunch with Cheryl Nickerson, and discuss research as well as possible career path options.
The poster session had ~50 posters from a variety of institutions.
ACPHS students sharing their research! This meeting provided an opportunity for many junior level scientists to share their work and get to know their peers!
Members of the ASM Student Chapter of Eastern NY attended the conference and volunteered their time to sit at the information table!
The mixer/poster session at the end of the science sessions was a hit!
Science sessions covered a wide variety of topics, from emerging fungal diseases, detective like work to discover the cause of measles like rashes, and disease prevention in hospitals to informative panels on educational approaches! We would like to thank all of our moderators and speakers for sharing their research in such engaging ways!
Hank Wang, PhD the Chief of Labs at Westchester Medical Center talked to the crowd about the use of Next-Gen Sequencing in antimicrobial stewardship.
Michelle Kaiser an infection preventionist and Mary George, PhD, the associate director of Microbiology at Albany Medical Center explain active surveillance of drug resistant infections in a hospital from the perspectives of both the laboratory and department of epidemiology!
Tobias Dorr, PhD from Cornell shared a fascinating story (and awesome videos) about how V. cholerae and other Gram negative bacteria survive Beta-lacatam antibiotic treatment!
Alex Ciota, PhD from the Wadsworth Center gave a great talk on West Nile Virus!
Mary George, PhD from AMC also lets us know that our meeting falls on International Infection Prevention Week!
