Ten Orange County teachers will get a curriculum boost next year with the help of $5,000 and $10,000 grants to teach about energy use and conservation.
The teachers were among 1,900 in the state to receive the "A+ for Energy" scholarships from global energy provider BP America for the 2005-06 school year. This is the second year that the company will provide $2 million in grants to encourage students to be energy-conscious.
Last year, West Orange Elementary teacher Vicki Anderson used her $10,000 grant to run a summer energy camp, teaching students about energy sources and conservation using experiments, cartoons, skits and movies.
Sue Hayden, a physical-science teacher at El Camino Real High School in Placentia and a winner this year, plans to use the $10,000 grant to work with teachers Paul Berman and Dennis Taberski to help students create posters, brochures and multimedia presentations.
"Having the kids teach each other about energy use and new technology ... will encourage them to use the research," she said. "It'll help them make better decisions in the future."
