PhD Resources
PhD Resources
This section collects some general resources I've developed over the years for my PhD students, that others may find useful
A short note on reviewing manuscripts for journals, with a list of common questions to consider and some best practices.
A blueprint for writing introductions
A short note on theory construction
A short video on conducting research during the PhD program (with accompanying slides here)
A presentation on building a research pipeline (from a 2018 doctoral consortium)
Research Statements
PhD students (and junior faculty) often ask me questions about how to write a research statement / what a research agenda or statement looks like, so I'm posting my research statements for both promotion to Associate with Tenure and promotion to Full Professor below. I offer these as examples, not as exemplars. I wouldn't say there were especially good research statements (they probably weren't) but they were enough to get me promoted, for whatever that's worth.
Research statement 2016 (for tenure)
Research statement 2021 (for promotion to full)
SMS PhD Chats
For some years now, Samina Karim and I (along with a roster of fantastic guest panelists) have been organizing and recording a series of sessions dealing with typical issues that PhD students face. The full list of these PhD Chats, with accompanying video recordings, may be found on the SMS website here.
