Introduction
Welcome to Library Student Service!
The goal of this course is to introduce you to how a library works, earn an elective credit, and be of "service" to the library staff.
You will have assignments to complete each week, in addition to a daily task sheet and any other tasks that are needed on a day to day basis. These may change (ie- deliveries, pick ups, assisting with a class). None of these assignments are intended to be done outside of class. Mark off your progress in the binder.
Often I will be working with a class during the period you are working. I should be able to touch base with you at the beginning of the period and maybe the end. I must be able to trust you to work and behave even if I can’t watch you. I have to trust you to behave professionally and responsibly. Do not attempt to do anything until you have been trained to do it properly. If you are not sure about doing something ask me or Mrs. Barrett. If you have to, wait to get help---do not just guess. If the wait is taking a while, work on your assignments.
General Guidelines:
· Work for the entire period; if you finish a job early be productive.
· Be helpful and respectful of all people using the library.
· Wear your student service badge when out on campus and be discrete when entering classrooms. Disruptive behavior will result in a lower citizenship grade.
· When you enter the Library each day complete the Library Task Sheet.
Assignments
Week 1
1. Read the Circulation Desk Rules.
2. Read the Circulation Desk Procedures.
3. Study the Library Map.
4. Study the Library Task Sheet so you know what is expected of you once you have learned how to use the Circulation Program, Destiny.
5. Complete the Staff Introduction Project. Download the document into Word and edit it with your information following the example shown. It is incomplete until you include a photograph of yourself.
Week 2
1. Read this PowerPoint about Shelving.
2. Take this online shelving test. If you don't complete it in one class period you will have to start over, it does not save. You must pass all levels to shelve books in the library.
3. Tell Mrs. Goodwin when you have completed the online shelving test. You will be given a real life shelving test.
4. You will be assigned a section of the library to be in charge of the shelving. All students must care for all of the library, but your section is where you should focus in your free time. The orderliness of your section will affect your grade. The size of your assigned section will depend on the number of student service workers in this quarter.
“Shelf reading is what we do to insure that our patrons and library staff can find materials in their correct collections, on the right shelves and in their proper order. When books and materials are shelved incorrectly they are as good as lost. By properly shelf reading you are making sure that your area is in proper order and that all the books are neatly arranged with all spines pulled to the edges of the shelves. You are also insuring that patrons will be able to locate what they need without a hassle.”
