A Group Template is used to give all the PCs a fun and useful back story. It also shows a plausible way that they would know each other. (As opposed to just meeting at "the Inn").
Product: A group template is usually short with each PC having two to three sentences that help relate the PC to the group template. It should allow the PC to have some kind of interesting background features that the DM can use to pull into the story being created.
Process: The DM will provide a setting background and some basic elements for the players to work with. (Example: All PCs are part of a military organization OR PCs should have had a specific illness/disease and recovered from it in the past.)
Basic world premise: The civilized world has been reduced to a series of points of light in a great wilderness of danger and monsters. The mighty empire of Nerath fell long ago, and the Bloodspear War devastated the Nentir Vale and surrounding lands. Into this outpost of civilization your campaign’s player characters have been dropped. The world depends on them, and their bravery, to stem the tide of dangers that still threaten the small pockets of civilization.
Players hometown will be Winterhaven (town details and map below). They are not nobility nor are they guardsman/regulars. The PCs are more powerful (even at 1st level) than "normal" people. Other than that let's talk about options!
Group Template - Diamond Crystal Salt miners
The PCs are all stake holders in a mine outside of town. Until recently the mine was closed due to the unsafe road conditions and hazards (nearby Kobold clan)
Allen's PC is the mouth main contact with the reclusive Master Jenkins the primary financier of the operation. He is the only person that "the Master" feels comfortable communicating with. Roles within the operation still need to be defined.
Mine Chief - Allen
Foreman - Cindy - Reports to Allen's PC and is responsible for the details of running the mine.
Other PC's may become involved as they desire. Currently all other PC's function as special Assistant to the Chief.
