In 1990-1995 I studied in Yerevan State University. These were messy, but significant times: in 1991 Soviet Union broke down and Armenia became independent, to everyone's excitement. What came afterwards (war, blockade, corruption, economic and cultural depression) diminished the excitement, but some people (including myself) are still excited about those times. I graduated in theoretical physics with highest marks.
In 1995-1998 I did PhD research in Yerevan Physics Institute and defended a thesis in spin-glasses and information theory under supervision of David Saakian.
in 1999-2004 I did two successive post-docs: in Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Amsterdam with Theo Nieuwenhuizen and in CEA Saclay, Service de Physique Theorique with Roger Balian.
Since 2005 I am based in the theory department of Yerevan Physics Institute. During 2005-2019 I was an invited professor in several research institutions:
-- Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan;
-- Institute of Information Sciences, University of Southern California, Los-Angeles, USA;
-- Institute of Theoretical Physics, Stuttgart University, Germany;
-- ISMANS, Le Mans, France;
-- Laboratoire de Physique Statistique de l'Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris, France.
-- Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Armenia has experienced serious changes nearly every year since 2016. The institute where I amworking also changed its name. Now it is called Alikhanyan National Laboratory, after Artem Alikhanyan, who created it in 1943 right in the middle of WWII. Since 2021 the Armenian state made the first serious investments in science. Before that scientists in Armenia including myself could only survive via international grants. As a result of this overall activity, and also due to Prof. Ani Aprahamian, the institute created a new Department of Quantum Technologies. I am leading it since 2022. The laboratory is multidisciplinary, just as my work is. Besides the proper theory of quantum technologies, we are doing biophysics, game theory, and quantitative linguistics.
