Variants

Side-Along Apparition

While Apparition is the magical transportation of just one person, it is possible to Apparate with more than one person. This is known as Side-Along Apparition. Side-Along Apparition is often used by licensed adults to transport underage witches and wizards with them. It can also be used in emergency situations to transport injured parties. The Ministry of Magic has recommended this method of transportation in the past as a way for parents and underage children to quickly get out of a dangerous situation.

In order to use Side-Along Apparition, the witch or wizard who is better able will perform the actual Apparition. The less able party will hold on to the arm of the other person. If you are the one holding on, you must hold on as tightly as possible.

Side-Along Apparition is not always voluntary. In 1997 when Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley escaped from the Ministry of Magic, Yaxley was able to grab onto Hermione's arm and thus Disapparate with them. Even though Hermione did not want to bring along, she had no choice once he grabbed her. Another example from that time was when Fenrir Greyback used Side-Along Apparition to transport Harry to Malfoy Manor. Try as he might, Harry was unable to break free.

House Elf Apparition

House elves also have the power of Apparition. Since House-elf magic does not require a wand, they do not need a wand to Apparate like most wizards do. When we examine House-elf Apparition it is important for you to remember that their magic is very different from ours are the limits placed upon us do not exist on them. As I mentioned in the first lesson, the charms and jinxes that prevent Apparition and Disapparition do not work on non-humans. House-elves are a great example of this. Because of their special type of magic and their need to obey commands of their masters, House-elves can Apparate and Disapparate into areas that you and I cannot.

Dobby is a great example of House-elf Apparition going where wizard Apparition cannot. Dobby was able to Apparate within Hogwarts Castle while he worked there. He was also able to Apparate into and Disapparate out of Malfoy Manor while the witches and wizards kept there were not. It was with his magic and Side-Along Apparition that he was able to save Luna Lovegood, Dean Thomas, Ollivander, Griphook, Harry, Ron and Hermione from the Death Eaters at Malfoy Manor. Unfortunately, Bellatrix Lestrange was able to throw a knife at Dobby as he Disapparated the last time. Since the knife made contact with him before he had Disapparated fully, the knife traveled with him and he was killed.

Kreacher is another elf known to use Apparition. He also used it at Hogwarts when employed there. Long before his time at Hogwarts, however, he used it to escape from the crystal cave. Kreacher's owner, Regulus Black, allowed Lord Voldemort to use Kreacher in 1979. Lord Voldemort took him to the crystal cave and forced him to drink a green potion so that he could hide a horcrux in the basin that held the liquid. Lord Voldemort left Kreacher there to die at the hands of the inferi. However, Regulus had ordered Kreacher to return home once he was done. Because of his need to obey his master, Kreacher's magic allowed him to Disapparate from the cave and save himself when wizards would not have been able to do so.

Phoenix Apparition

Phoenixes are another creature capable of Apparition. When a Phoenix Apparates, they disappear and reappear in a burst of flames. As you might expect, Phoenix Apparition is similar to that of House-elves in that they are not limited by the same restrictions that witches and wizards are.

Fawkes, arguably the most well-known Phoenix in the magical world, used what I assume to be Apparition several times. First, in 1996 when the Ministry of Magic attempted to arrest Albus Dumbledore, Dumbledore was able to escape from Hogwarts with Fawkes. It is likely that Fawkes used his Apparition powers to get around any protections the Ministry had placed to stop Dumbledore escaping. This means, of course, the Phoenixes can also use Side-Along Apparition.

Tracking Apparition

While this is not another type of Apparition, I believe it is important to discuss at this point. While there is nothing official about the tracking of Apparition, it is widely believed that the Department of Magical Transportation at the Ministry of Magic tracks all human Apparition. This is how they catch those who Apparate without a license. When the Order of the Phoenix arrived at 4 Privet Drive to move Harry Potter, Alastor Moody wanted to avoid the use of most types of transportation, including Apparition because he believed it could be tracked. It is unknown if House-elf and Phoenix Apparition can be tracked, but since Dumbledore escaped with Fawkes and the Ministry was unable to find him, it is unlikely that creature Apparition can be traced like human Apparition.
