ADOPT A BIRD

Adopting a Bird from A-Parrot to A-Flamingo, Inc.

1. THE PERFECT ADOPTER: A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue is looking for patient Adopters without a shopping list of expectations about a parrot they want to adopt. You will be adopting an older parrot which may come with “quirks” one must be able to work through. Parrot personalities can vary from home to home also. Most of the birds we get in are older, but still have a lot of years of life ahead of them.

We prefer to adopt to experienced parrot owners, meaning one who has lived with a parrot in their home .

A-Parrot is just trying to eliminate another parrot recycling situation for the bird turned over to us.

2. WANT A BABY PARROT? A rescue organization is not a pet shop. We rarely have gotten in baby birds for rehoming. A-Parrot will take in most any age of parrot, though. PS: We consider any parrot that is under 3 years of age to be a baby, in our opinion.

3. YOUR LOCATION: A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue adopts out locally. Adopters must reside in the state of Ohio. Parts of Michigan and Pennsylvania may be fine. A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue does NOT ship birds. We do not deliver birds to you, nor do we meet you part way for drop-off. The actual Adopter must come to us in Brecksville to visit the bird of his/her choice after your application has been approved and you want to adopt from us.

4. DONATIONS: There is a rehoming donation per bird. Toys and food are included. Most parrots go out with cages. Since we are rehoming live animals, we are not a give-away site. There are expenses involved in owning a pet of any kind. Our parrot rescue organization works for "birdseed" in order to be able to take in the next needy parrot looking for a new home. Cages are technically free, so there is no donation adjustment if you do not want the cage the bird came in with.

5. IMPORTANT -- A-PARROT's MAIN ADOPTION REQUIREMENT

We need a proof receipt you owned a Parrot in the recent past.

For Parrot adoption, you will need to be able to send us a PAPER COPY OF A PROOF RECEIPT (on stationery) to prove you have actually OWNED AND LIVED WITH a Parrot in the recent past. The receipt needs the species of the bird on it. Our email interview will tell you when we need this receipt.

Please understand that this is the Internet and we do not know you. Therefore, a proof receipt of YOUR PERSONAL ownership of a parrot is necessary as part of your application file.

PROOF OF PARROT OWNERSHIP RECEIPTS--OTHER SAMPLES: Ex. purchase receipt for a parrot, vet check receipt, grooming receipt, DNA certificate, bird prescription bottle label, pet sitting or boarding receipt, parrot cremation receipt, etc. The bird species must be on the receipt.

The list below will NOT count as proofs:

(1) Pictures, videos, and personal references (except from a vet you take your birds to) are not acceptable.

(2) A vet receipt from a previous owner of your Parrot.

(3) Parrots you visit, pet sat for, or parrots that were family owned when one was a child.

Our Parrots need to be adopted out to experienced adult parrot owners. We are just trying to be as clear as we can be here... Feel free to email us any questions you may have.

6. ADOPTING LARGE PARROTS: If you are interested in adopting a Macaw, Amazon, or Cockatoo, your proof receipt must be for one of these species. (Actually, if you own any of these species, you would most probably be approved to adopt any bird we have all the way down to finches.) Sometimes ownership of a Ringneck parrot will qualify to adopt a Macaw, Amazon, or Cockatoo. We are matching up Parrot personalities here.

If you are interested in a Conure, you need a proof receipt for a Conure, Quaker, or a larger Parrot.

7. SMALL BIRD ADOPTIONS: If you are interested in adopting a small bird (budgie, cockatiel, lovebird, finch, canary), a NO proof receipt copy is necessary.

8. VISITING? A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue is unable to consider pre-adoption "visits" until an Adopter's application has been approved by our Board of Directors. Instead, our "Virtual" parrot tour is on our page at Petfinder.com http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelterid=OH662

When your application is approved, please read the page, "OUR HOME RESCUE", prior to making your visiting appointment.

9. FINAL ADOPTION APPROVALS: Our Board of Directors makes all final adoption decisions. A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue reserves the right to turn down an applicant and also to refuse to accept any bird offered to us. Our policies may change without notice.

10. VISIT OUR PARROTS: Once your application has been approved by our Board of Directors, you can then schedule a visiting appointment at your convenience. If there is a delay on your part in getting back to us after we email you that your Application has been approved, please be aware that we will still be interviewing potential Adoptors in the meantime. Since people do change their mind without letting us know sometimes, we cannot hold up looking for great homes for birds left in our care. If you happen to change your mind about proceeding, please be kind enough to let our interviewer know.

11. THE PARROTS THAT A RESCUE GETS IN: We are adopting to you with the condition the parrot will stay in your home under the approved Adopter's care, not be sold, given away, or rehomed by our Adopter or the Adopter’s family at a later date. By stating this up front, please understand that A-Parrot Rescue is totally concerned what happens to any bird that has been turned over to our organization, and we want to try to eliminate the "recycling" of our parrots into improper homes. Most parrots have have had several homes throughout the years, which is sad. Since parrots do live a long time, the unwanted parrots are always the older ones; i.e., ten years old to 30 years old and older. A-Parrot Rescue will accept these older birds and is always looking for adopters who will consider an older parrot.

12. MANDATORY RETURNING A PARROT TO A-PARROT RESCUE: If you have a "CraigsList pet recycling mentality", meaning that if the pet does not work out for you in a week you sell it on Craigslist, please do not apply for any of our birds. Our Agency is looking for permanent homes for the parrots left in our care. All parrots must be returned to A-Parrot if they do not work out for our Adopters. The Adoption Contract you will sign commits you to this fact.

.

13. NO GIFTING: A-Parrot to A-Flamingo Rescue does not adopt out parrots as gifts for children or to adults who have never owned a parrot before. We need to interview the person who is actually adopting the bird from us. See our "proof receipt" requirement (No. 4).

Other adoption policies and qualifications apply. Our "email interview/chat" explains more.

14. QUICK ADOPTIONS: In a hurry to obtain a parrot? Want to adopt a parrot NOW, or by this weekend????? Our screening process will take longer than that. People who are really sincere about obtaining a rescue parrot will not mind the slight delay so A-Parrot can get to know you and about your bird experience. Most applications have been approved, but our Board will still need to read over your application first.

15. STEP ONE: A-Parrot to A-Flamingo's adoption process starts with an email interview/chat Everyone must follow A-Parrot's specific email interview process to be fair to all applicants. We do not interview by phone.

Email our interviewer at: aparrottoaflamingo@danworld.com

16. We are looking forward to meeting you via email! Applications can be mailed out when your email interview/chat

has been completed.

The actual parrot adoption Application is not on this site. You need to go thru our interview first...

Bird Terms Clarified:

Defining Adopting vs. Purchasing a Parrot

Adopting - Technically a rescue organization does NOT “sell” you a Parrot. It will adopt the bird to you. A rescue organization screens its possible Adopters FIRST. There will be an application or a questionnaire for you to fill in, there may be a home visit, email or phone calls to ask you questions about yourself, your family, and your parrot experience. You will need to wait for approval of your application. Not every application may be approved sometimes.

A-Parrot Rescue requires a proof receipt copy to prove you owned a parrot in the recent past. Not all rescues will do this, it is their option. Since this is the Internet, this is just a way to make sure one is experienced in parrot ownership. There will be a rehoming donation per Parrot. There will be an Adoption Contract for you to sign to insure the bird is cared for according to the rescue organization’s policies. Then the bird is yours. Congratulations! You have just ADOPTED a bird.

Rescue organizations will also give you the known background of the bird per info obtained from the previous owner.

If you are not a patient person, if you expect to get a Parrot within 2 days, or are not truly a person who wants to put some effort into possibly re-training an older parrot, then see below:

Purchasing - You pick out the bird you want and give the Pet Shop or Breeder your money the same day. You walk out with the bird immediately. You may or may not even get a receipt. Some Pet Shops may claim you are adopting one of their birds. This is totally incorrect. If no time is spent checking YOU out first, you are Purchasing the bird.

Summary - All birds need good homes, choose your method. But do not be fooled into thinking that you are "adopting" a bird when you are in all actuality "purchasing" the bird. Sellers at bird shows will sometimes claim to be "adopting" a Parrot to you. They may even give you a big sob story as to the bird's background. It may be true, but then it may not be. You are really purchasing that Parrot from them if money changes hands immediately, with no checking YOU out prior to your taking the bird home with you.

Please do not be insulted if a rescue person asks you a lot of questions first. It is a real rescue organization's policy to make sure their pets find a responsible home, maybe a better home than the bird actually came from. If you want to “ADOPT” a Parrot, be prepared to be screened according to the rescue organization’s qualifications for adoptions first!
