To provide a second layer of protection to PayPal accounts – to increase security, to enhance the trust users have that PayPal is a safe environment, which would lead to increased usage resulting in an increase in Total Payment Volume (TPV).
I lead a cross-functional design team, and collaborated with the eBay & Verisign design and engineering teams to launch Verisign’s Second Factor Authentication token in the US, Germany and Australia consumer markets as "PayPal Security Key". I proposed user-research that resulted in reducing project scope, designed an easier to use product with an industry first one/two-step login process that eliminated user error, resulting in twice the expected adoption rate at launch.

The login process is a unique and adaptive one/two-step flow that takes into account user-behavior and eliminates error, thus providing for a smooth login experience as compared to rigid single-step login implementations by sites like etrade.com or internal VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) where the user is always required to append the six-digit security code from the device to the password field. This video by one of PayPal's product managers, reviews the login process and answers some of the most frequently asked questions and challenges we faced and designed for.
