Students will be able to gain proficiency in a second language if they use it, and they will be inspired to use it if they care about what they are learning. I seek to engage and excite students using a wide range of inputs including literature, film and music. I am a meticulous organizer with a highly digitized, blended pedagogy that activates class and independent study as well. Through constant discussion and sharing, my class is a relaxed but structured environment in which students become confident practitioners of the language.
Student feedback
"Your energy in the classroom is contagious, it even made me feel awake when I had mono!"
"I've always been a language person, but when I came into your class the love for it strengthened. It became grounded in the real things that you teach, such as the history of a people and themes that connect to the world around us. This made me realize that I could go further with Spanish than just superficially knowing it."
"You made Spanish accessible through your outstanding attitude. One of the main reasons I stuck with Spanish is because of how much fun I had in your class and how simple you made it."
Excerpt from Experienced Teacher Evaluation
"Antony is a terrifically agile and effective teacher. He is poised to become a teacher-leader – a mentor to colleagues in language learning and an innovator in/with practices in language learning.
First and foremost: there is no “down” or wasted time in Antony’s classes. The intricate, precise, intentional scaffolding of his lessons is, as he notes, precisely prepared and meticulously organized. He introduces new material (vocabulary, constructions, etc.) in the context of the more familiar, and he spirals through activities and exercises with a sound sense for the appropriate pace.
I was struck by the ‘bridge’ Antony has constructed in Spanish 3 to upper level courses and skill levels. The 3rd year students are using the language in purposeful and authentic ways even as they acquire additional proficiencies and practices."
