A New Kind of List, a Different Kind of Wealth

We’re all familiar with the Forbes lists featuring the world’s richest, most famous, most powerful celebrities, and so on and so forth. Here’s a list you probably haven’t heard about: the (En)Rich List.Launched this March, the Post Growth Institute refined our idea of these lists. Instead of celebrating wealth and status, the list is a celebration of 100 of the most inspirational figures in our world–from the past and the present. From visionaries like the Green Belt Movement’s Wangari Muta Maathai to The Moneyless Man Mark Boyle, these individuals have played a significant role in contributing to a more sustainable future. They’re also sharing the spotlight with an Honorable Mentions list, in which WiserEarth founder and Blessed Unrest author Paul Hawken was mentioned. The Post Growth Institute is an international group exploring and inspiring paths to global prosperity that don’t rely on economic growth. The motivation behind their project with the (En)Rich List is really that there is ”richness” beyond a person’s socioeconomic position.“The people on this list represent wealth that cannot be defined by a dollar value. Those listed in our ‘Top 100’ and ‘Honourable Mentions’ have a diversity of approaches, positions (both geographical and political), and perspectives (see our latest comments on the limitations of such diversity here). They have opened up new avenues for engagement with important matters by inviting us to question what is, challenging us to imagine what may beand suggesting practical ways for how we might get there.”“We hope that this list—and the conversations it provokes—can bolster existing and new efforts to construct global realities grounded in social equity and ecological sustainability.”
