Technology

Grades 4-5

  • Climate Change

      • On the student page there is an article that discusses the use of satellite and radar images to study the earth.

      • There is also a section on the extraction of ice cores, and the analysis of gasses found in the cores.

      • See also the ROV (remote operated vehicle) video clip that shows behavior of krill. (See the links on the site linked on the Impacts of Climate Change slide.)

  • Extremophiles

      • ROVs are used to search for extremophiles under the sea ice.

  • Water, Water, part 2

      • There is a short video on retreating glaciers. The video mentions grounding lines. Satellite technology is used to locate the grounding lines under glacial ice. Grounding lines are where glaciers switch from being grounded to being afloat.

  • Water, Water, part 2—Teacher

      • There is a NASA Science video (8 1/2 minutes) explaining Operation Icebridge. This program uses specially equipped airplanes, satellite imagery, radar and a digital mapping system to monitor glaciers, ices sheets, and sea ice.

  • Who Owns Antarctica

      • Satellite imagery and ground based radar are used to locate natural resources under the ice.
