Exploring block chain and cryptocurrency: Winter 2019

Description: The object of this project is to understand block-chain. A block-chain is a decentralized ledger. It is the fundamental idea behind cryptocurrency. Block-chains have found many other applications through smart contracts.

The basis of a decentralized ledger is a signature scheme and mining. In this project, we will learn these fundamental principles about block-chain. Then we will look into open source software that is available and implement them and see how they function in practice. Since this topic involves cryptography and finance both, we would try to involve experts from both the fields. Dr. Ayan Mahalanobis has kindly agreed to mentor some significant parts related to crypto and computations.

Once we have a functional understanding of a decentralized ledger we will see how they can be used to solve various problems leading to innovation.
