Lalan Fakir…a man without religion establishes a new village in the jungle where a new social order prevails.. Sunil Gangopadhyaa creates a mystical canvas of the life of an interesting persoality of 19th century. When the novel starts, Lalu was caught and tried as thief who tried to steal the horse of a Village doctor Krishna Prasanna Sen. Lalu tells that he was caught when he tried to tie back the horse to its stable. Later Lalu accompanies Mr.Sen on his way to Ganges for a holi dip. There he gets infected by Small pox. Every body thinks that he was dead. He was floated in Gages using A Plantain raft. Later he was saved by a Muslim Lady and he stays with her for some time. When he returns to his village his mother and wife does not accept him and he starts his journey.
A man with a realization on the futility of religion, with beliefs bordering Sufism , Sunil tries to portray the life in vivid colours.
