PALMS
Together with Martin Wittenberg (UCT) and David Lam (University of Michigan) I have created a set of harmonised South African surveys with labour market information called the Post-Apartheid Labour Market Series (PALMS). PALMS is created from the PSLSD (1993), conducted by SALDRU, and the October Household Surveys (1994-1999), the Labour Force Surveys (2000-2007) and the Quarterly Labour Force Surveys (2008-2019), all conducted by Statistics South Africa.
PALMS is available via DataFirst.
PASES
Amy Thornton, Martin Wittenberg and I created the Post-Apartheid Socio-Economic Series (PASES), which harmonises the October Household Surveys (1994-1999) and General Household Surveys (2002-2024), all conducted by Statistics South Africa.
PASES is available via DataFirst.
PASES version 1 was released in November 2025 and was funded by the SA-TIED project of UNU-WIDER.
ESS
I have also created a harmonised set of 4 surveys of informal firms (called the Surveys of Employers and the Self-Employed conducted by Statistics South Africa in 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2013. This harmonised dataset is called the Employers and Self-Employed Series (ESS).
ESS is available via DataFirst.
