Typical Delivery Agreements

I have two different agreements I use, depending on the boat owner's preference. Either a daily rate that costs a certain amount per day from the time I leave home until the time I return, or a flat rate that allows an owner to know almost exactly how much it will cost to deliver his boat. some owners prefer the latter so, barring breakdowns, they can budget the delivery cost exactly. Because I have to build in contingency costs, the flat rate delivery fee is usually higher than the daily rate.

My crew and I will be careful to comply with all local laws and ensure that the reputation of your boat is a good one should you ever visit ports where we have stopped. Care will be taken, also, to ensure that wear and tear on the boat is kept to a minimum, never running the engines too fast, reefing early, taking steps to ensure only clean fuel is poured into the tanks, performing routine maintenance as we go, etc.

Should it become necessary to stop during the passage to wait out bad weather or take care of a breakdown, I will provide documentation explaining all necessary stops and communicate with you throughout the voyage.

All expenses (such as crew transportation to and from the boat, provisions, fuel, dockage, customs fees, etc.) will be extra. I will provide a detailed expense accounting and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. I will endeavor to keep expenses to a minimum and consult if any major purchases are necessary.

Unless otherwise agreed, when I arrive the boat should have full safety gear (including a liferaft with a current inspection), a clean bottom, comply with all Coast Guard or DoT regulations, be full of fuel, outfitted with adequate spare parts, cleaning supplies, and be otherwise ready to depart. I expect to spend _______days inspecting the boat and provisioning before we depart. The boat should be outfitted with jerry cans or bladder(s) for at least _____ gallons of fuel to be carried on deck.

I will deliver your boat in the shortest time consistent with good seamanship and safety. The daily rate including time spent getting to and from the boat for a crew of ____,including myself, will be _______.

If all this is acceptable, please reply in an email to that effect.

I will require a deposit of ____ immediately to secure your time slot and a further ________ to cover expenses under way. It is wise, for your protection and mine, to be there or have a representative to take delivery of and inspect the boat when I arrive. If it’s available, I will require a copy of a recent survey before I depart. At the end of the delivery, I will provide a "captain's survey" detailing my observations and recommendations.

If all this is acceptable, please reply in an email to that effect.
