You can have the best captain in the world delivering your boat but it doesn't do much good if he's without a first class crew. After more than three decades delivering boats, I've learned what it takes to make a good crew. Over the years I've built up a roster of some of the very best sailors around. Many started with me as deckhands and are now qualified captains in their own right. What does it take to be a good crew? It takes knowledge of, and respect for, the sea. A good crew is not just continually scanning the horizon for ships and weather dangers, he also inspects the boat's gear for signs of wear or other problems, as my long-time mate, Larry Reagan is doing here aboard the ex-Whitbread Around the World racer, Ceramco NZ, a 70-foot Bruce Farr design.Larry's been with me on two transatlantics, across the Med to Northern Africa, from Florida to California via the Panama Canal, and numerous other lesser passages. He is always the first person I call when I have a delivery to do.
