Academic Work

"You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions." (Acts 20:34)

My full-time job is at the University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business, where I've been teaching since 1994. I teach business communication to undergraduate students and managerial communication to graduate students. My greatest joy is in helping people to find their most authentic, empowered, professional voice - both in their writing and their speaking. Students I've worked with come from all over the world.

Since 2005, I've also been an administrator, serving as Director of Writing Programs at Ross. In that role, I manage the assessment of incoming MBA students' writing and speaking, facilitate their achievement of five communication competencies, and supervise a staff of consultants who work one-on-one with students to improve their communication skills. Each year, we offer over 2,000 of these meetings, and students consistently thank us for helping them get jobs, internships, and placement in special programs; they also tell us how our work has helped them be more effective participants in class and to communicate more effectively with their professors and peers. In 2022, I became co chair of the Business Communication department. You can read my bio statement here.

In my academic work, I sometimes present papers or workshops, and I belong to several professional organizations. You can see some of these below.
