Even after all these years since his death, people still talk about Maestro Segovia. Since I started my career in radio few a decades ago my audience in the Bay Area love guitar music during my shows. I bring to the mix all kinds of styles of guitar music such as classical, flamenco, and the styles of Latin America. After all these years of making special shows and small documentaries about Maestro Segovia I find my audience requesting more of his music. This year since KKUP 91.5 FM celebrated their 50 years anniversary, I am showing some appreciation to my Audience and have decided to create The Maestro Andres Segovia documentary. Since July this year 2022 I have sent invitations to some of the musicians about doing this documentary, and they were happy to hear that. Some wanted to participate. Producing shows of this caliber has been very challenging for me and some musicians. Since Maestro Segovia is an International Super Star in Classical guitar music and well known around the world. Here we are after all these months of producing the documentary being released this November 2022.Shows like this take months of production. They can only be produced once a year. As for my audience, they love the music of Andres Segovia. My love for guitar music started in South America in school when I was hearing guitar music at the age of seven in school events. Maestro Segovia has left his music legacy to us and it is up to the musicians if they want to continue keeping his legacy alive by passing itfuture generations. The ALACristina Show will continue creating Segovia shows to keep his legacy alive. Thank you for your time. Over a year ago I had the opportunity to see Isabel Martinez on YouTube playing “Recuerdos de la Alhambra”, one of my favorite pieces. I invited her to make a show to introduce her to the Silicon Valley audience. My dream became reality because she had prepared for us a special presentation from her studio in Spain to honor Maestro Andres Segovia in her native language Spanish. List Documentary Comments

28 DEC 2022 Hi Christina, I think the documentary was great success for I am waiting for more of Segovia. I just had no idea of him. It seemed I was listening to music coming from the 17 century at times - nothing like the flamenco I had ever heard. I especially liked hearing him talk. Love Nancy.

Now, I want to share some of the comments of Daniel Roest a friend that was part of the beginning of my radio career. Cristina

Fri, Dec 16 at 9:52 PM Cristina, You did a fantastic job, and you should be very proud of your work on this 8 hour documentary. I was very happy to participate and facilitate getting Lorimer, Sakellariou, Tanenbaum and Reyes - and to share my own story. Hearing Lucarelli talk made me want to reunite with him - it has been many years.

Wishing you very happy holidays and all good things,

Abrazos,

Daniel

It was a pleasure to have Guitarist Moro in the Maestro Andres Segovia documentary. I want to share with you some of his comments after the show - Cristina

Sat, Dec 17 at 10:51 AM Thank you Cristina. I had listened to the entire show. What a thrill that was—mostly because of the high quality of your work.. You were so gentle, spoke so perfectly, were so complimentary, and I also enjoyed George Sakellariou and Michael Lucarelli’s segments. I particularly liked Michael’s remark that he felt the joy of being alive on this earth while Segovia was also still alive, for I too felt this having met him and after spending my life lovingly remembering how he told me he never washed the dishes because he had an excuse.

I’d love to touch base with George again after all these years since he and I gave a joint informal after-dinner performance at the home of retired CBS correspondent Bob Pierpont for Bob, his wife, as well as Bob’s dearest friends, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ignatius, also in Bodega Harbor. George played beautifully. Then he visited me here at my Sonoma Coast beach house and recorded a few exquisite pieces in my garage recording studio. I also enjoyed hearing, from George’s narration in his segment, that he played my favorite Segovia piece, Fernando Sor’s Variations on a Theme by Mozart, privately for Maestro Segovia! I now feel thrilled to be alive on earth while George is here and alive.

Warmest best wishes, and Happy Holidays,

Moro www.moromusic.com

My Life Changed When I Met Segovia - by Daniel Roest

My Life Changed When I Met Segovia

by Daniel Roest

for Cristina Boyd and Amenidades Latino Americanas

My life changed when I met Segovia – I was just 11 years old and shook his hand backstage. His smile at a child paying his respects was like being blessed by the Pope. Let me back up – I was already a guitarist – I had studied for five years by then, so I could appreciate the magnificence of what I saw and heard on stage from this great artist. Private lessons with Segovia protégé Bunyan Webb were soon arranged. How I treasured his beautiful autograph on my copy of his record, “Platero and I” – how I enjoyed listening to it and dreamed of playing like him!

The passion for guitar never left, and now that I’m 70, I have played guitar continuously, with love, since I was six. I really got serious about it and aimed for a concert career like Segovia’s and those of Julian Bream, John Williams, Michael Lorimer, Bunyan Webb, Christopher Parkening, Oscar Ghilia, Alirio Diaz, Narcisso Yepes, Jose Rey de la Torre, Manuel Lopez Ramos and many others.

When I say Segovia changed my life, I mean it. You need that kind of personal connection to something or someone to find your calling. I saw him live five times over several decades, and that first meeting led to skills that enabled success in the art form at a level that, while it wasn’t Carnegie Hall, allowed me to be a true ambassador for the art form. I performed extensively and also presented some of the world’s top classical guitarists.

Segovia was a great name like Casals, Rubenstein, Heifetz, YoYo Ma, and yet he was just a man. But this man working in the Twentieth century was born in the late 1800’s and carried himself with a very Old World bearing – the way he dressed, spoke, wrote, performed, and pursued his vision for the humble, unamplified nylon-string guitar to take its place on the greatest stages of the world.

Was he the greatest guitarist in the world? I can argue, yes, yes he was. Not that his technical or interpretive skills were far above any competitor. Actually, for me, the word “great” is along the lines of this: “Of the greatest classical guitarists, Segovia made the greatest impact on the guitar over the course of his career.”

So, his “greatness” was a combination of success in four “missions”: (Numbers)

1) Tour the world bringing the art form to millions of audience members over a very long performing career – he started as a teen and gave his last concert in his nineties. These concerts were often turning points in the lives of audience members, spurring them to try out this way of playing the guitar. It was playing classical music on the guitar like playing classical music on a piano. He produced what came to be known as “the Segovia Hush” – two thousand people being as quiet and attentive as possible so that not a note was missed.

2) He recorded many albums throughout his career, and collectors gobbled them up. They often contained new works for the guitar dedicated to him by composers honored to have him represent them to the world – Tansman, Ponce, Villa-Lobos, Moreno Torroba, Turina and others. Add to these his arrangements of music for other instruments – the great works of Bach like the monumental Chaconne come to mind. And he championed music written for the instrument by prior classical guitarists and vihuelists (the Spanish guitar’s predecessor) – Tarrega, Llobet, Sor, Aguado, Carulli, De Visee, Milan, de Narvaez and others.

3) He taught and was a great teaacher. He held masterclasses all over the world and took on a few very talented pupils with touring concert careers ahead of them. These artists in turn taught countless other students, a percentage of whom had or have successful concert and recording careers. Along with this personal teaching and transmission of his artistic vision one on one, he had a secondary avenue for this purpose – campaign for the guitar to be accepted into universities and conservatories alongside the established icons of orchestral instruments, piano, strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Let’s draw a line from him to me now. He contacted the Wisconsin Conservatory – as he did many others – in support of Robert Burns, a member of his masterclass – so now classical guitar was accepted as an instrument in which music majors could focus and obtain teaching and performing degrees. I entered college as a guitar major in 1970 after college music departments across the country had opened up to guitar. Robert Burns moved to California, we connected within the first year, and he guided me through my first three years of college as a guitar major. He was to be the second Segovia protégé I studied with, after Bunyan Webb when I was 11. What if there had never been a Segovia? I might not have been able to play the guitar as my main instrument in the music department – and I would not have even entered college as a music major.

4) And finally, he worked hard to expand repertoire for the guitar – almost as if it were solely up to him to alleviate the great imbalance in substantial, high quality guitar repertoire versus that available for the piano, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, harp, and other orchestral instruments. The composers I mentioned earlier did a lot to help, and of course there’s more to go, but Segovia did indeed have a HUGE impact on the available repertoire. He also organized etudes for guitar – the most famous of which include his folio of twenty studies by Fernando Sor – they’re gorgeous and helpful in advancing technique. He did a folio of 24 major and minor scales, writing in the foreword that the study of scales advanced technique more than any other activity. And he commissioned from the great Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos 12 concert etudes that challenged players and dazzled audiences.

So this is why Segovia can be considered the greatest classical guitarist of the Twentieth Century when considering which guitarist had the greatest impact on the art and its popularity.

I want to thanks Cristina very much for this invitation, and I leave you now with a highlight of my concert career that I gave as an encore after a successful concert when I was near completing my master’s degree at San Jose State University, and this includes audience reaction as it pleases me no end to hear it again. Enjoy!
