श्री भगवान उवाच
अशोच्यानन्वशोचस्त्वं प्रज्ञावादांश्च भाषसे ।
गतासूनगतासूंश्च नानुशोचन्ति पण्डिताः ॥ २-11॥
The Blessed Lord said:
Thou hast been lamenting for those not worth thy lamentations! Yet thou dost utter words of lore. The truly wise mourn neither for those who are living nor for those who have passed away. (PYT)
No one should not grieve over matters which are not worthy of grief - this is what the wise ones have said. Knowledgeable ones do not grieve over that which is gone, neither do those who see with clarity and impartiality. (LMT)
Thou hast grieved for those that should not be grieved for, yet thou speakest words of wisdom. The wise grieve neither for the living nor for the dead. (SST)
न त्वेवाहं जातु नासं न त्वं नेमे जनाधिपाः ।
न चैव न भविष्यामः सर्वे वयमतः परम् ॥ २-12॥
It is not that I didn't exist before. Neither is it that you didn't exist. That all these kings didn't exist, it is not that either. And all of us won't exist in the future, this is also not the case. (PBT)
It is not that I have never before been incarnated; nor thou, nor these other royal ones! And never in all futurity shall any one of us not exist! (PYT)
I am the Supreme Lord, due to my own powers, that I never was, is not so. In the same way, that you were not, is not so. That all these kings were not there, is not so. Because you all are my parts. Hereafter, upon destruction of our bodies, that we will not be, is not so. Therefore, being devoid of birth and death, we all are eternal. (LMT)
