Tai Ahom students demand tribal state

The All Tai Ahom Students Union has called a 12-hour Assam bandh on September 15 to protest against the non-fulfilment of their demand of declaring Assam a “tribal state”.

The union’s vice-president Rajkumar Pratap Singha told reporters here today that declaring Assam a tribal state was essential to preserving the identity of the indigenous tribes and communities as continuous influx of illegal migrants was posing a great danger to the existence of Assamese society.

He said if nothing was done now, Assam’s demographic scenario would soon be like that of Tripura where local people have been outnumbered by the settlers who dominate the state in all respects. He demanded issuing of inner-line permit to check influx.

“Once Assam becomes a tribal state, there will be legal provisions to safeguard the interests of its different tribes and communities,” Singha said.

The student leader said there would be restrictions, as in other states of the Northeast which have been declared tribal, on buying and selling of land and property and suspected illegal migrants would not have political rights.

He criticised chief minister Tarun Gogoi for saying that there were no illegal settlers at Kaziranga National Park. He alleged that the government was trying to protect the illegal settlers. He also criticised other political parties — national and regional — for being vocal on the issue on the eve of elections while forgetting all about it later on.

Pradip Konwar, general secretary of the union, urged the state government to do the necessary paperwork so that six tribes of the state — Tai Ahoms, Koch Rajbongshi, Moran, Motok, tea tribe and Chutia — could be declared Scheduled Tribes. This would facilitate the granting of tribal status to Assam.

On the Assam Tribal Sangha’s opposition to granting ST status to these tribes, Konwar said there was a misunderstanding and that the Tai Ahoms had the status of Other Backward Class now.
