Compline

What is Compline ?

Compline, also known as Night Prayer, is a service in the Christian Church denoting the end of the working day.

It is a service which has been used since the early 6th Century. It is thought to have been first used by St. Benedict when the monks would gather before midnight, they would say, sometimes sing Compline, before rising early the next morning to begin the set times for prayers during the day.

Why do we offer such a service?

We all spend so much time rushing from one thing to the next in our busy lives today. This service offers a time of quietness, giving space to put the thoughts of the day in order and to look to God as the evening draws in.

What happens?

During the service there are :psalms, prayers, a bible reading and a thought for the day along side a short period of silence. The complete service lasts between 20-30 minutes.
