God: Heiarchy?

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

• Is there a heiarchy amongst the Father, Son and Spirit?

• Are the Father, Son and Spirit equally God or is one more so than the others?

• In what ways are they equal and/or not equal?

• Does the Bible suggest that the Father is superior to Jesus and the Spirit?

• Why does Jesus only use the title “God” for the Father?

• Why is the Holy Ghost called God only once in the NT, yet the Father is called God over 160 times?

VIEWS TO CONSIDER:

• EVANGELICAL VIEW: While the Godhead members have different roles, they are each fully and equally God, fully and equally worthy of worship, neither being greater or superior to the others.

• LATTER DAY SAINT VIEW: While the Godhead members are equal in some senses (ex. they are equally authoritative over mankind, they represent each other, they share the same divine power, each is our God etc.), God the Father is God (a being of great power and authority) in a superior higher and ultimate sense, being the God and Father of all (even of Jesus), being the source of Jesus’ callings, power and authority etc.

FATHER ALONE IS CALLED (BY JESUS) “THE ONLY TRUE GOD” IN THE NT:

FATHER ALONE IS CALLED THE “ONE GOD” IN THE NT:

• 1 Cor. 8:5 There is none other God but one… For us there is one God, the Father

• 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and man (See 1 Timothy 1:1-2, 1:17 for who Timothy is speaking of when he says “God”)

• Eph. 4:4-6 There is… one Spirit… one Lord… one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all

• Gal. 3:20 God is one (See verses 11,17 and 26 for context)

• James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well (See James 1:1 for who James is speaking of when he says “God”)

• Mark 12:32 And the scribe said unto him… There is one God; and there is none other but he (Note: Who “God” is here is unclear)

FATHER ALONE IS CALLED HIGHEST / MOST HIGH GOD IN THE NT:

• Jesus is called the Son of the “Most High God” in the NT (Mark 5:7)

• Luke 1:35 The ower of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God

FATHER ALONE IS CALLED “GOD” WHEN ALL THREE MEMBERS ARE MENTIONED (EVERY time that the title “God” is used when all three Godhead members are mentioned together in the same passage, that title is given ONLY to the Father):

• 1 Cor. 12:4-6 There are diversities… but the same Spirit… the same Lord… the same God which worketh all in all

• 1 Cor. 6:11 Ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the Spirit of our God

FATHER IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL:

JESUS ONLY USES THE TERM “GOD” FOR THE FATHER:

• Jesus ONLY used the term “God” for the Father, never for himself, never for the Spirit, never for all three together as one God.

JESUS IS SUBJECT TO THE FATHER:

• 1 Cor. 15:28 When all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him (God the Father, see verse 24) that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

JESUS IS A SERVANT TO THE FATHER:

• Matt. 12:18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen

JESUS IS THE SON OF THE FATHER:

• Acts 13:33 Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee

• John 1:14 The Word… the only begotten of the Father

JESUS IS HEIR TO THE FATHER (A JOINT HEIR WITH MANKIND):

• Rom. 8:16-17 We are children of God… heirs of God, joint-heirs with Christ

• Heb. 1:1-2 God… hath… spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things

COUNT OF WHO IS CALLED “GOD” IN NT: In the NT, the Holy Ghost is called God just once, Jesus about six times directly, while the Father is directly called God over 160 times! This great inequality in the application of the title “God” (along with the other points listed above) suggests that the Father has a unique right to that title, that He is God in a superior and ultimate sense.
