One of the most important aspects of my job is providing service to my community, which includes not only my students, my department, my university, but also the mathematics community at large as well as the Youngstown community where I have the privilege of working. Most of this service comes about in many small ways, giving my time and expertise to serve on committees, advise research projects, senior theses, and Masters theses, vote on issues and people I feel passionately about, and provide my support for those in my different communities.
Some acts of service are not so small. I am a co-advisor for the student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics at YSU; this is an organization whose mission is to "promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences, supporting individuals and institutions as we all work to make a more just and equitable community". I support the students at YSU who are furthering this mission at YSU in big ways and small. Here is an article in the YSU newpaper, the Jambar about my role in the organization: Math Equations Aren’t The Only Problems Women in Mathematics Face
I am also proud to be an advisor, alongside Dr. Alicia Prieto Langarica, Ms. Brenda Scott, and Mr. Charles Stark, for an after-school program called PRIME. This program was born out of the lack of diversity in the population of YSU students, especially in STEM, together with the opportunity to encourage local Youngstown high school students to pursue higher education in STEM at YSU by helping them build the confidence and develop the tools to get there and succeed. To see more about this program, go to PRIME.
