Alejandro Arbelaez received his PhD in computer science from Université Paris-Sud XI in 2011 for his work on applying learning-based techniques to solve combinatorial problems. He also holds an engineering degree in Computer Science. After finishing his PhD he worked as a post-doc at the University of Tokyo and University College Cork. He is currently a lecturer at University College Cork.

Dr. Arbelaez's main research interest include: Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Local Search, SAT, Parallel Search, and Applying machine learning to hard combinatorial problems.


  • From Sept/2021 - Current. I am a Lecturer at the Polytechnic School in the Autonomous university of Madrid.

  • From Aug/2019 - Aug/2021. I was a Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at University College Cork.

  • From Jan/2017 - Aug/2019. I was an Assistant Lecturer at the Computer Science Department at Cork Institute of Technology.

  • From Oct/2013 - Jan/2017. I was a post-doc at Insight Centre for Data Analytics (before 4C), under the supervision of Prof. Barry O'Sullivan

  • From Nov/2011 to Sept/2013 I was a post-doc at the JFLI lab at the university of Tokyo, under the supervision of Prof. Philippe Codognet and Prof. Mary Inaba

  • Our Solver CSLS was placed second in the SAT 2011 competition -- random SAT category, and was also the best parallel solver in the same category.

  • From Aug/2013 to Oct/2013 I was a lecturer at Universidad Javeriana and Universidad del Valle

  • From Nov/2007 to May/2013 I was a PhD student at INRIA/MSR. Under the supervision of Dr. Youssef Hamadi and Prof. Michele Sebag
