“the best way to teach is to understand, respect, and build upon the student’s prior knowledge”
-Eric Jensen
Mrs. Scott (Nasisaq) is Yup'ik, from Bethel and Homer. Any extra time away from school is spent with her husband and very energetic son. Mrs. Scott enjoys reading, cooking, art, sewing, exercising, biking, hiking, and subsistence food gathering. She met her husband in Anchorage via Myspace (before Facebook), where he served in the USAF for 8 years as a mechanic supporting the F-22's.
Mrs. Scott graduated from the University of Alaska Southeast Masters in the Art of Teaching Program for Secondary Mathematics in 2015. Initially, Mrs. Scott was pursuing a chemistry degree but wondered why the mathematics dictated the outcome of a chemical experiment.
Mrs. Scott has a Mathematics, B.S. degree from Southern Oregon University and studied Geographic Information Systems at UAA. East HS (Anchorage, AK) hosted her student teaching in the subjects of pre-algebra, precalculus, and algebra II. She taught for two years at Skyview Middle School and was selected to be a part of the 2016-17 Blended Learning Cohort as a second-year teacher. Under this program, she completed the Quality Matters training "Flipping Your Class & More: Exploring Blended Learning (K-12 DYBC)". She has also taught Algebra II and Survey of Algebra at East High School, and middle school math and science at the Alaska Native Cultural Charter School.
Mrs. Scott is grateful for her education, sponsored by the UAS PITAAS Program, Calista Heritage Foundation, American Indian Science & Engineering Program (AISES), the American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC), and the Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC). Quyana!
Professionally, Mrs. Scott has been a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) since 2014 and served as the KPBSD Title VI Indian Education Staff Liaison and Vice President for 2016-2017, Skyview Site Council member, and was nominated as a BP Teacher of Excellence in 2017. She is passionate about education, Alaska, and workforce development pathways for our young people.
In her pre-teaching life, Mrs. Scott worked at the Alaska DOT&PF for five years as a Research Analyst II in Anchorage, while simultaneously tutoring UAA athletes, teaching PE for the ASD Indian Education after-school program, and working part-time at the Alaska Club. After extensive number crunching, she had fun working with middle and high school youth setting up the Schoolyard after-school program at the Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC) with techno-cultural projects in a MIT-created FabLab for 1.5 years. Think laser-cutters and 3D-design!
"Part of my philosophy of teaching is using vocabulary-based exercises to strengthen understanding. Part of the algebraic struggle is the disassociation of language tying concrete to abstract thinking. Basically, it's my job to break it down and show how symbols are an essential part of math fluency. "
