Al-Anon Recovery in the Dane County Jail

District 8 facilitates an Al-Anon group for women, “Women’s Serenity”, which meets every Saturday in the Dane County Jail at 6:30 PM. This is not a drop-in meeting; volunteers must first be approved by the jail.

Join Us for Meetings in the Jail

Current members of the Women’s Serenity group find these meetings to be personally enriching.  We have also seen that bringing Al-Anon meetings to members and newcomers who are incarcerated is service that makes a meaningful difference in women’s lives.

We invite you to join us!  Requirements for Women’s Serenity meeting attendance:  Must be female; undergo a background check performed by the Dane County Jail; have at least one year of working the program and the steps; have a sponsor and have strong personal boundaries. All those approved for jail meetings must attend a mandatory four-hour orientation, conducted by the Dane County Sheriff’s Department. This orientation is held on Wednesday mornings. If possible, we ask that you commit to attending at least one meeting per month.

We invite you to attend one of our periodic meetings, held outside of the jail, to learn more. For more information, email danejailalanon@gmail.com.

Donate Literature

Donate new or gently used 12 Step literature at the Fitchburg Serenity Club (near the front door), at the Northport Clubhouse, and at St. John’s Lutheran church (in the “lounge”) on East Washington Avenue in downtown Madison. You may also mail literature donations to “Chaplains, Dane County Jail, 210 Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd, Madison, WI 53703.” The chaplains give the literature to inmates upon request. Setting up a drop-box at your meeting location is a good joint project with AA and other 12 step programs.

What to donate: Forum magazines, pamphlets, Al-Anon books and daily readers such as One Day at a Time, Courage to Change and Hope for Today (soft covers only).  AA Grapevine magazines and other 12 step literature are also welcome. Remove or obliterate all personal information before donating. Keep your eyes open for Al-Anon books at garage sales and used bookstores.

What not to donate: non-12 step literature and literature with hard covers.

Donate Money for Literature

Send checks to the District Treasurer with designation to “Jail Literature.”  Funds will be used to buy newcomer packets and daily readers for inmates.

Welcome all Newcomers

Some of the new faces at your meetings may have been in jail, looking for support in living a sober recovering life.
