Solar Grant
In 2004, four seniors from Alameda High wrote a grant letter to the British Petroleum (BP) for their final project. BP America offered $2 million grants and scholarships to give California teachers tools to teach kids about energy and energy conservation. With the help with these four talented students, Dr. Griffith was able to win $10,000 of the $2 million beneficiaries across California. So far, during the 2004-2005 school year , the class spent the money on solar lab equipment which is used to teach students K-12 about solar energy. Furthermore, the class spent a portion of the money on printing solar brochures they made to distribute to the public. Each student was responsible to do a solar brochure, with information regarding what solar energy is, how can we use solar energy, why solar energy, the benefits and disadvantages of solar energy, photovoltaic cells, passive solar heating, and other renewable energy etc. The objective is to inform the public and especially the students about solar energy and the environmental problems we have created from using too much fossil fuel for energy instead of solar.
